TMI..Infection

I'm like 75% sure I have a yeast infection. My main symptom is itchiness!! So. Freaking. Itchy. I've never had one before so I'm clueless about what to do. I called the nurse line and she said see a doctor within 72 hours. I called the appt line and she literally laughed when I said I think I have a yeast infection and need to be seen asap. She said it is a very acute reason and I can try for an appt again tomorrow but nothing is available for a while. Sigh. So lovely ladies, how do I cure this dang thing?! Is it ok to just go buy monistat? Ugh, I feel like it's always something with my health. :/ any advice is appreciated.

Re: TMI..Infection

  • Lol you don't really need a doc unless it's severe. You can get canestan cream and pill.

  • Lol thank you @kdoak2015 I know it's nothing serious but it's so darn annoying. I called the nurse hoping she could just give me an OTC suggestion. She said not to treat a yeast infection unless you know for sure it's one. Off to the store I go!
  • If its bugging you that badly I'd treat it. I've only had one in my life a long time ago and used over the counter stuff. Good luck hope it goes away soon.
  • I went through a point where I was getting a ton (it was the lube we were using). Diflucan is a god send and that's what you need from the doctor. Sometimes you might be able to ask them to call in a prescription for you.

Otherwise you can try the over the counter stuff, but it takes longer to work.
  • I'd definitely try OTC first and if that doesn't help, ask the dr to prescribe you one
  • A pharmacist should be able to help suggest OTC options.
  • Thank you ladies!!!
  • So this is also TMI, but after I had my baby I had crazy itchiness down there that was not a yeast infection. My midwife said it was just skin irritation from wearing a pad for 5 straight weeks. I would try to see the doc before treating it at home if you can. It could be a yeast infection, or some other kind of infection, or possibly nothing at all except changing hormones. If you have never had one before I wouldn't treat it based on an assumption that is the problem. That's just me though.
  • Ya know, that was my first thought! I was wearing pads for 8 weeks straight! Did you do anything to cure it?? My only symptom is itchiness!
  • @ammnam14 I got irritation after wearing those darn pads also and it went away with no treatment. I have had numerous yeast infections in my life though and while the otc works it is just messy and annoying (and don't do the one day it's awful). If you can get diflucan from a provider I would try that. Even a walk in clinic can help you. Diflucan is a medical miracle for yeast infections! I work as an APN internal med and that's one thing my doc and I will give people without being seen when they call and say they have one. It won't hurt you to do either. Hope you feel better soon though, they suck...
  • My only problem is I switched insurance but it doesn't start until the 1st. I have to go to one certain provider or I'll get charged up the ying yang. :/
  • Okay this may seem nasty but it works every time. I stick a garlic clove in my bag (tmi) garlic naturally kills yeast. And if you don't want to do that then a drop of tea tree oil also works well. Helps relieve the itch and yeast can't become resistant to it.

Don't use those messy creams or stick a garlic clove up your V, just take a probiotic and it will go away.
  • You know it's a yeast infection bc of the discharge. Do you have any? if you can manage, with a mirror, take a peek in your hoohaa and if you see chunky-ish discharge then it's most likely a yeast infection. Sorry for the vocab. I'm tired.

This. I was on heavy antibiotics for years and always knew I had a yeast infection from the discharge. I don't know if it's still available but azo yeast worked well for me. They're just OTC pills I'd usually find in the same area as the stuff like monistat.

However to get it cleared up faster a lot of times I would use the momistst ovules as well. They're messy but sweet lord do they do the trick.

Anyway, whitish almost cottage cheese looking discharge and I seem to remember it smelling like yeast. There's also how it itches imo. There are areas it would be worse (so sorry for the tmi) like under the clitoral hood and down deep around my cervix. If wished well with water I'd get temporary relief. I never had to look with a mirror to know either. The discharge gets fairly obvious.
  • You'll know if it's a yeast beast if you put the Monistat cream on your itchy bits and it burns like a mother trucker for a few seconds and then you get relief. I've had a few of them.
  • I have normal discharge, definitely not cottage cheese like. No foul odor. I'm starting to think it's just irritation from pads.
  • Yeah, if it's yeast you'll know. That shiz don't mess around.
  • Well....woke up with cottage cheese like discharge. Sigh. Why do women go through so much crap?! Sorry for the TMI update as well. Lol
  • I would always get a yeast infection after taking antibiotics. I take probiotics everyday and the last two times I got put on antibiotics I doubled up on the probiotics, and always go commando at night. I didn't get a yeast infection either of those times.

  • Go to the pharmacy and pick up both a Monistat Vaginal Health Test and Monistat. I think between the itchiness and discharge that does not smell bad, you can safely treat for yeast. Monistat 1 sounds good but typically is not as effective as a 3 or 7 day Monistat and takes as long as the 3 to work anyhow. The ovules are less messy than the cream. I think the ovules would be best for you because you're getting up during the night and it will stay better than the cream. It's gentle enough to use during pregnancy so FWIW, I would skip the garlic and get to feeling better.

If if you can, call you doctor to have them send in a script for Diflucan also. Use it along with the Monistat. One pill immediately and one 72 hours later.

Keep your appointment with the OBGyn in case it is stubborn or not actually yeast. Some people need to treat more than once but your doctor will likely advise you to see if symptoms start improving over the 3 days following treatment.

Put the ovules or cream in before bedtime and no tampons while treatment/following 7 days.

CONDOMS WILL BREAK DOWN FROM THE MONISTAT. Sex is ill advised anyhow because it's irritating and can be passed to DH. If he has itching, Monistat 7 cream 2x per day for 7 days.

Cotton underwear, try to let air circulate as much as possible and if you are still bleeding PP, try to change the pad as much as possible to keep things dry.

    feel better soon!
  • I never had one until I got pregnant! i think hormones play a big part in regulating the balance down there and probably post- partum hormones can wreak the same havoc. Sorry you are dealing with this irritating annoyance.
  • Have you guys ever had a yeast Infection without itch? I have the "chunckyish discharge" every now and then, a bit of odor and some random light crampyness. I don't want to treat OTC if it's not but it may be that simple.
I had yeast (thrush) on my nipples about a month ago and took diflucan but maybe now I have yeast again? I've been eating yogurt everyday. I should probably start taking probiotics as well.
    Thoughts?

Didn't you have an appointment with that OBGyn last Friday? My thought is that whomever you choose to see should swab you at your next visit.

The appt for yesterday was cancelled remember? I had some other concerns as well that cleared up on their own and if this thing cleared up too I thought I would wait it out another week before rescheduling and save money it if turned out to be something simple like yeast infection.
But do yeast and itch always go hand in hand?

Of course I remember it was canceled. That thread wasn't one I would soon forget. I thought because you had ongoing issues you needed to be seen somewhat regularly and therefore assumed you would have made an appointment with a different doctor in your practice.

To answer your later question, yeast and itch do not always go hand in hand. You can certainly have one without the other.

Swabbing is the only way to tell for certain.

If you aren't still wearing something, make sure you use panty liners with the monistat inserts.
  • Thanks ladies, I bought a generic form of monistat and so far so good. I have an appointment on the 8th so hopefully I'll be okay by then!!

Sometimes the medicine can burn a bit when you first insert it. That's completely normal and will ease off.
  • It sounds like its probably yeast but on tge subject of pads. On a postpartum thread someone said their hospital discouraged the always pads because the plasticy surface seemed to irritate more postpartum, I did find after the first week that was true and switched to a more kotex textured pads (cottony) pads were more gentle.
