Swaddling

My baby boy is almost 3 months here and for the past 3 days he has broken free of his swaddled blankets at night. We use a normal swaddle blanket and keep his arms down then wrap him once more in a thicker warmer blanket as well. It gets cold in his room since it's the middle of winter here otherwise we would just use the swaddle blanket. He has been sleeping through the night from 9:30-6:30 up until this started to happen. When he breaks free his arms are all crazy which we call them spaze hands because they r all over the place which wakes him up.

I thought about about keeping his arms out and just wrapping his lower part but like I said his arms/hands go all over the place and he does not sleep good then wakes and cries. I wrapped my other children up until about 5-6 months which worked perfect but with this little guy I'm not sure what to do!?! Should I buy one of those Miracle blankets or would that be a waste at this stage? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated since I want my nights back to sleep! Also, we wrap him really tight thinking he won't get out but that has not helped.

Re: Swaddling

  • It wouldn't hurt to try a miracle blanket. We bought one off amazon, it didn't work for our LO, so we shipped it back and got our money back. If your LO is used to being swaddled, it wouldn't hurt to try. You could also try just leaving one arm out of the swaddle for a while.

  • Once ours started breaking out of her swaddle we transitioned her to not being swaddled, started with one arm out, then both. Even after a few weeks she doesn't sleep as well as when she was swaddled, but she'll get used to it. You could always try a sleep sack instead?
  • Jane started breaking free of the swaddle around one week, so we don't swaddle. I just lay a heavy blanket over her. She went through a stage where her hands startled her, but she got used to it quickly. I do find that if she is in crazy arms mode when she is asleep, if I can pop a paci in her mouth, her hands will become still.
  • We used the swaddle up 50/50. Babies arms are swaddled upwards so they can selfsooth and you can unzip one arm at a time to transition them out. We had to stop using the halo swaddle wrap because our lo hoodinied right out of them by 2 months.

She had been fully transitiond out of a swaddle until the wicked 4 month sleep regression hit. Now she is in a merlin's magic sleep suite...which really is magic =)
  • You could try a Halo sleep sack. That's what we use. You can swaddle one or both arms in or use it later on with both arms out.
  • We never swaddled because our LO hated it from day 1.  We have the halo sleep sack (got them from amazon prime).  Also, my MIL got us these velcro swaddling blankets.  We use them on our LO from the waist down.
At the beginning, he did get startled with his arms, but he got used to it.
  • Mine does the same I started doing his naps with no swaddling and in the mornings after his 6 am feeding I don't swaddle him
  • We stopped swaddling DS at about two months. We would wrap him super tight in the blankets and he would break free and then pull the blanket over his head. He wears a sleeper and a fleece, long sleeve wearable blanket now.

DS was never a good sleeper to begin with. So his sleep pattern didn't get worse when we stopped swaddling. It took a week or so for him to not wake up when we put him down. He's almost four months now and always sleeps with his arms up.
  • I posted a thread about this a while back. I was so stressed out about dropping the swaddle bc LO had just started STTN, and I was afraid that I would cause him to regress. We transitioned him out of the miracle blanket just after he turned two months old (he was consistently breaking free and waking up crying once he was out) to the Halo sleep sack swaddle. We never did one arm out and then the next; we left both arms out from the start. You should have seen him on the monitor the first night...it looked like pure bliss! His arms were just stretched out wide, and he loved it. After a week and a half or so, we went to just a regular Halo sleep sack. He's in heaven. He will be 15 weeks tomorrow, and he has been rolling over for a few weeks now, so he gets in his sleep sack and always ends up rolling to his side or stomach to sleep, and he couldn't be happier!
  • I bit the bullet and bought a zippadee-zip and he loves it. There is a Facebook page where you can buy used ones as well. I just bought one from the site that was decreased due to the print being discontinued.
