SHHHHHH

I think I've spent over 8 hours SHHHIng today while simultaneously rocking and bum patting. No one put this in the parenting pack at the hospital that I will spend months SHHHHUshing my baby in a tight swaddle while having back cramps, and a mouth so dry that I need three glasses of water. Gawd help me.
i need a drink, baby take a frickin bottle already!

  • I totally hear ya! But here's a tip: I realized that if instead of rocking I twist at the waist (turn upper body side to side and keep legs still) I'm working out my waistline haha! I used to do this exercise before I got pregnant and it slimmed my waist. The trick is to turn your upper body as far as you can go to either side. The best part is it still rocks DD to sleep. :)
I will do this right at this exact moment
  • And there's a device called a baby shush (can be found at babies r us) that will shush for you. We have it for in the car and it works miracles for us.
  • I bounce on an exercise ball when DS is fussy, it gets the burps out and strengthens my core (I hold him upright support his head against me and tuck his legs in). One of my mom's best friends is a physical therapist and she said the ball is great for DS spinal development and is one of the reasons he has such good head control (we started using the ball because we don't have a glider).

My DH loved @groovylocks camelback wearing idea and said I need one!
  • I bounce on the ball a lot but I find my back hurts so much. My LO is 13lbs though lol
  • Hmm... I don't shhhhh my baby
  • My first loved the simultaneous shhhh, butt spank, and back breaking rocking! By the time she was ready to cry it out, we were hunch backs and felt zero guilt.
  • Hmm... I don't shhhhh my baby
It's the only way mine will sleep, queen of the sleep fighting. If I stop SHHHIng she just stares at me lol
  • A medical noise maker sounds similar to shhhhhh. It is like $50 but works like a charm for my little one. There is also a free app in the Apple Store for white noise machine. The brown noise works on that app if you don't have $50 to spare

I have nothing to add except that I am in the exact same boat!!!! So much shhing, rocking, bouncing, and jiggling!!!! We have the shhh gadget and babe had decided he prefers my brand of shhhh for some reason so that sucks. Only good thing is if I time my shh well with jiggling, rocking, bouncing - oh and bum patts, can't forget those - the shh seems to be the magical turning point for him conking out.

DH will bounce for an hour on the exercise ball but my back can't take it! I am soooo thankful for my glider!

Any of you have sleep fighters where just when they drift off they start struggling in their sleep again and you have to start all over!? Babe is just shy of 6 weeks so too early to cry it out (and it would have to be cry it out, no such thing as laying him down drowsy to drift off) but I feel like I'm starting to loose my mind battling him at every nap and bedtime!!!

Yes we have the same life. I am getting a glider this week I think it will help!!

DS has started doing this within the last week or so (he's 10 wks) especially in the middle of the night. We're also gonna have to cry it out and as bad as I feel I'm ready for him to be old enough and in his own room. I'm running on fumes here!
  • Daily battle all sleeping, I left the house today with her in tow just to avoid having to shush her and it took some work but I got her to sleep for a bit at least :|

Fwiw I have a nice big glass of wine sometimes during my last night feed getting dd to sleep (her longest stretch) & feel zero guilt.
    Amen, sister.. Me too.

I seriously can't live without substances. Coffee in the am, wine in the pm. Olive is hitting or exceeding her milestones. I'm not worrying.

  • Hmm... I don't shhhhh my baby
You should! It's soothing to them. SHHH to adults is offensive but SHH to babies is a throwback to the kinds of sounds they heard in the womb. I instinctively did it when we were still in the hospital and my doctor approved and told me this. She said to never shhh in anger but rather to gently shhhh when i was holding olive to my heart. The combination of my heartbeat and the wooshing shhh sound is miraculous. I've never had trouble settling her.
  • @preggoandglowing I'm so going to try this.
I'm forever bouncing on bed, bum patting while white noise is playing on YouTube.  Need to break the habit before it's too late.
  • Same here! I found a free white noise app for my phone and it works like a charm! We even have a dedicated station in the car that's just static.
  • I have found an iTunes track of Pink Noise that is extra staticky and gets my boy every time. I had so many of those dry mouth shush sessions since he's a sleep fighter too that I needed a lazy way out
  • Odie hates shhh-ing. Ever since he was a few days old. He prefers when you whisper songs to him or just hum. But if you start shh-ing or when we experimented with the baby shusher, he gets super upset, even when he wasn't that fussy to begin with. It is just not what his ears want to hear. At night, our sound machine plays rain or ocean sounds, so not QUITE white noise.

  • I've been using a shush on an app and it works usually, thankfully, saving my sanity once shush at a time
