Parenting after 35

Period questions

Hi ladies!  I miss being active on this board, but life has been so dang busy.

Okay, so let's talk periods.  I gave birth on July 6 via C-section.  I tried to BF for a month, but never really got the milk going.  I had discharge for 10 weeks after having LO.

Got two super heavy periods toward the end of the year.  Then, well, nothing.  I mean nada.  I have taken two pregnancy tests, just to be sure we didn't have another pleasant surprise.  Both were negative.  So, I am wondering if this is normal or if I could be peri-menopausal or something.  (I'm 44 on Saturday ... yikes, lol!)

Thoughts?

Re: Period questions

  • Gosh this board isn't very active, is it.... unfortunately I won't be able to help - still breastfeeding after 7 months, and no period yet (and I will only be 42 this year  )

  • My doctor told me it could take time for period to regulate but I would check with your doctor since we don't have age on our side.  I'm nursing and LO is almost 7 months.  My period started back in January but it is not regular.   I was late in February and early in March. We are tryin to conceive again so I'm hoping that the irregularities don't interfere. Plan to call Doctor myself to ask.

  • Hopefully you got more answers from your doc than on here. I haven't gotten mine yet either (9.5 months later), but I'm still nursing... though I did briefly have the same worry! (but geez, I hope not yet @ 38!)

  • Thanks, ladies.  I haven't talked to my doc.  I guess I probably should.

Still no period.  Took a third test, lol.

  • Hmm. I think I'd ask your doc. I'm still breastfeeding at 9.5 months and I haven't gotten my period yet. I'm 38. I don't miss it!

  • So, I went to the doc.  They did blood work and have me scheduled for an ultrasound.  Put me on hormones.  Bloodwork came back normal and, basically, I am pre-menapausal.  We've been calling Chloe "the last egg" for a while, lol.

Still have to have the ultrasound, but it looks like we are definitely one and done.

  • @jerseygirl227 , Glad you at least got an answer. Must feel like quite the reality check - even if OAD was the direction you were leaning, it's different knowing the choice isn't even available.

  • I think it will be so great for her to grow up with all the attention. I wish I could give that gift to my LO. Especially with special needs. It appears we're dealing with FASD in both kids. We have confirmed drinking during pregnancy in baby.

But we're giving the gift of being blood related to one family member at least. It's probably a good trade off for toddler but man I'm tired.

The mom is pregnant again. Ugh! We can't take the next one. We are not sure we will be able to meet the needs of 3 FASD kids or more.

As pp said, grieve this stage of your life.
  • Thanks, ladies.  I wouldn't have minded giving Chloe a sibling, but it is what is it.  It's funny ... I never knew how much I wanted to be a mom til I was one.  Rather than be sad about this, I am extremely grateful for this wonderful gift I was given.  :)  I have many friends who wanted kids and never could have them, so I know how very lucky we are.

  • Nursing while typing, lets see how it goes...
Would you mind sharing your bloodwork results?
I wonder what they mean by you being pre-menopausal...
I had horrible results before we conceived my daughter and we now have two kids.
So being pre-menopausal didn't mean much!

  • I wouldn't mind; however, they did not give me the full set of results.  And I didn't ask.  (Just had blood work done at my gen prac doc a few months prior.)  Am guessing there is a way to test for hormone levels, maybe?
