NOT breastfeeding, have IUD, NO period!

Hi guys!  OK I had a hard time searching this topic because anything about no period usually coincides with breastfeeding.  I am not breastfeeding and I did NOT get my period around 10-12 weeks post-birth.  Around that time, I went to my doctor to get an IUD.  She was surprised I hadn't gotten my period yet so she did a pregnancy test.  I am NOT pregnant.  She placed the IUD and I bled for like two days after with cramping but she told me that it was not my period - just my uterus lining shedding a bit more.  I've gone back to the doctor to check my IUD and everything is still in place but still no period.  Anyone have or know of a similar situation?  My doctor doesn't seem concerned but she also isn't telling me much?  (Don't worry, I'm not thrilled with her and looking for a new doc).  I DO have a lot of (sorry for TMI) discharge and sometimes it is blood tinted but nothing that is like a real-deal period.  Am I over thinking this?  Am I just messed up post birth?  I'm also concerned because I had a retained placenta after giving birth to my son and that was traumatic and I had to be brought into the OR for a DNC.  Anyway, I'm probably just super paranoid but thought I would take to my mommy board for help!  Internet searching + doctor is not turning up much lol.

  • Which IUD? I got a mirena about a month ago and bled the day after insertion and I've had steady light bleeding for the past two weeks. Sometimes in the morning it'll be a lot, but most of the time not even enough to bother with a tampon. My midwife said spotting is normal, but I may not get periods with the IUD.

I wouldn't worry, honestly. I had my IUD placed 10 weeks pp (not bfing either) and hadn't gotten my period yet. The doc was not concerned at all but from what I understand, a pregnancy test before an IUD is required no matter what. I had the same on again/off again light bleeding for almost 5 weeks, which again I was told is normal. She also said some women get their periods and some don't, or your periods could be irregular for up to 6 months before they even out or don't come at all. It kinda sounded like anything goes on the subject. Like I said, I would not be worried.

ETA, the kind I have is called Liletta.
  • I got a mirena put in after I had my first. I breastfed and pumped until she was a year old and once in the morning and once at bedtime until she was 17 months. I never got my period. I had my mirena taken out at 18.5 months and got my period immediately.

I don't think it was breastfeeding that caused no period because of the 5 months of only twice a day. She also started solids at 4.5 months.
  • I had mirena put in as well. My doctor said because of my age (25) that there was like a 25% chance that I would stop having periods. I'll have some spotting that'll last about half a day every now and then but no period. I did bleed for a long time after having it in though. Like 8 weeks! I stopped breastfeeding about a month and a half ago.
  • I actually have the paragard (copper iud).  Thanks for the responses it sounds like what is going on is pretty normal.

  • I had a mirena for 5 years prebaby and never had a period. One of the perks of it in my opinion!
  • A common side effect of IUD is periods going away all together. Be happy! I'm one of the rarer women who has bled 60 days straight since insertion of the Merena. Awesome -.-
