Swimming

Has anyone taken their LO swimming at a community centre pool yet?

Re: Swimming

  • I haven't yet but will the week after next. By then he will have if his second rounds of jobs. I already bought a little wetsuit, swim nappies and a floaty ring. Can't wait!

  • Double check the rules before you go. I believe Red Cross swim lessons don't start until 6 months because LOs can't regulate their temperature in the water before then.  I would imagine each pool has different requirements.
  • We go swimming weekly!  Our pool has a kids side that's quite a bit warmer than the main pool but our son still wears a water t shirt to help keep him warm.  He LOVES the water and it's so cute to watch.  We can start swimming lessons at 4 months and are going to look into that!

    Baby #2- EDD: 07/18/17

  • How long do you stay in the water with him? I read something about 10-15 minutes because they get cold so quickly. But I have a wetsuit for him plus the pool is warm, so was hoping longer.
  • She'll be 6 months in April and I plan on starting swimming lessons at the local YMCA at that point. We have a pool in our backyard so swim lessons are a must. Other than swimming diapers what do those of you that have done swim lessons think I need to buy before her first lesson? Or do you think they'll provide the floaties and stuff?

My SO broke the pool heater, but I still don't think I'd take her before 4 months even in a heated pool. We can start lessons at four months, but I'll likely wait until six... And we live in Florida. I've been gifted no lie like 15 swim suits, but I'm not going to put her in a two piece.

This post has reminded me that I need to put the pool fence up, so thanks!

    Eta: my auto correct sucks.
  • @trishee13 I used to be a Life Guard and a WSI (Water Safety Instructor) for the city that I used to live in. We never used floaties or anything. We held the babies the whole entire time  at a certain age, even with toddlers, it was more about getting them used to and comfortable with the water. So we would hold them and have them float on their tummys, backs, blow bubbles, play games etc.

I would say from my personal experience all you need for her is a swim suit, swim diaper and a towel  everything else they might use for a game or whatever should be provided.
  • Thanks so much @danniellemichellexox ! I would've shown up with a whole boatload of Stuff  :D
