Trouble TTC

who does your scans?

I was just curious, when you have your ultrasound scans who does them? It threw me off yesterday that the nurse practitioner did my scan rather than a registered sonographer, when she didnt know what she was looking at she call the doctor in he did a scan and also didnt know what he was looking at. Is this normal for most RE offices or should this be a red flag to find some where else?
I work with sonographers so Im going to get obe of them to scan me and see what they think but im pretty sure the dr commented on an ovary that wasnt an ovary and what they were seeing was free fluid and not the 4 things they thought it could be.

Re: who does your scans?

  • My ultrasounds are never done by a sonographer.  It's always either a nurse or the RE but they ALWAYS know what they're looking at.  I think it's very concerning that your doctor doesn't even know what he's looking at...

  • My RE does almost all my scans, although once or twice I've had a nurse when the RE is really busy.  I find my RE to be very reassuring and generally have good bedside manner.  Plus I think the RE is very gentle and quick.  I've have ultrasounds in ERs and hospitals as well...one time for a cyst I had someone who was a trainee, which was terrible.  And I feel like the RE just knows what he's looking for and does the scan, whereas a tech has to be more thorough to get everything the doctor might want to see.

  • Yeah yhe nurse practitioner thought she saw either very thick uterine lining or a fibroid. And the doctor thought it was eithr pollops or that I just ovulated. Their machine doesnt have doppler capabilities so they could see if it had blood flow. Either way Im getting a hysto in the next few weeks. I just wasnt sure what was standard for scans.

  • A doctor always does my US....my RE does it or a resident doctor does it with my RE right there overseeing. My RE always points out things on my US so I'm pretty confident she knows what she is looking at.
  • My clinic always had an RE doing the scan, then someone else for bloodwork, and after all that, I'd meet with the nurse (sonographers are not allowed to comment on anything here).
  • Mine were always sonographers. It's strange to me that that seems to be the minority. I guess I just assumed it was standard practice.

  • My scans are usually done by an RE or the fellow but accompanied by an RE. Once i had the nurse(or PA i  am not sure of her title) but it was a straightforward scan and she was very good. I have never seen a sonographer though.
