I walked around several centimeters dilated for weeks with my first and ended up being induced 8 days after my due date. You may go into labor sooner rather than later or you may walk around dilated for a few more weeks.
I knew someone who was 5 cm dilated for about the entire last month. I, on the other hand, went from 0 cm dilated to baby in 12 hours last time. This is why I'm not even having internal exams done this time.
I've been sitting at 2 cm and 50% effaced for over 3 weeks now. Oh, and I'm pretty positive I've been losing bits of my mucus plug here and there as well. I'll be 37 weeks Sunday. Surprise, surprise I'm still pregnant....
With my daughter I went from 0-10 in 24 hours. I honestly don't think it's a good indicator for anything, other than to get ones hopes up. So sit back.
It really depends on you. Every person is different. I had a friend who was walking around 3 cm dilated for 2 weeks and she still ended up going past her due date. I mean definitely make sure everything is ready because you never know but don't get your hopes up. Believe me I did that and I'm still here...still pregnant
I'm in the same panicky kind of boat. I'm 38w5d, 2 cm dilated, dropped down, and I just lost my mucus plug last night. Last night for the first time, my pelvis hurt so bad it brought me to tears everytime I moved. It feels like she's sitting right on it. I feel like she's getting ready to come early, but will probably make me wait longer just to mess with me!
I see a midwife and she doesn't check dilation or effacement until 39 weeks because it really isn't indicative of anything. Like everyone else said, it could be today... You could go another 3 weeks. She said that the symptoms I experience tell her a lot more than dilation/effacement. I wouldn't panic!
Re: I am 3cm dilated. Panic or I still have time?
My OB just mentioned that once I do start getting painful labor contractions to come on in, as it could mean less time between stages.
just kidding, my bestie was a "stretchy 4cm" from 36w-41w! her baby was born close to 42w
