It doesn't bring on labor. What it can do, though, is help get you in a better position for baby to drop down, which in turn can put more pressure on your cervix and help it to become more favorable for labor.
Birth/exercise balls can also be really helpful once you're actually in labor, too.
I have one and at this late stage in pregnancy it is a really comfortable chair because there is room for the belly. Also when baby comes you can sit on it and bounce to give your arms a rest. So I would definitely recommend it.
I use mine every night. It takes the pressure off of my lower back but again like previous poster said it will not induce labor just get baby in a favorable position.
They are very comfortable to sit on while pregnant. I don't know for sure if it brings on labor but I bought one and bounced on it off and on for one day. The next morning (Friday) I woke up with contractions. My son was born at 2:24 am Saturday morning. Before that I had absolutely no signs of contractions and I was only dialated 1 cm.
I started using my ball about 2 weeks before I gave birth. It was wonderful for my aching back, if nothing else. When I was in early labor I sat on one for about 20 minutes, when I stood up my water broke and contractions became intense - coincidence who knows?! It certainly wont hurt!
I've been sitting/bouncing on mine very frequently daily for weeks and I'm 7 days overdue. (It's like magic the way it induces labor. I'm like totes dilated all the way.)
