Hemangioma

anyone's LO have one of these? Dakota wasn't born with it but it did show up pretty early I would say when she was about 3 weeks. Hers is on her face but they can be anywhere.( I'll attach a picture of her so you can see it) ... Her pediatrician wasn't concerned and said we would just watch it and make sure it doesn't get to big or affect her vision. She also said they normally go away by age 10 so I thought nothing of it.    Anyways hers has been randomly bleeding.... The first time it happened she was in the bath tub and I didn't freak out (I guess it's the nurse in me) I just held pressure for a few minutes and it stopped.. The last few times I've noticed it, it was when she woke up during the night she would have dried blood on her face or the sheet of her bed. Anyways  because it keeps happening she is going to see the doctor today at 2:00 but I was just wandering if any of you have any expierence with this with your LO?

Re: Hemangioma

  • No experience but she's cute

  • My DD has one (she will be 2 at the end of April). Hers is on her arm near her elbow but I don't recall it ever bleeding. It's fading but still there.
  • No experience except that I was born with one in the middle of my forehead. It went away on its own and left no trace.

  • I think my LO has one on his buttcheek. The dr said it will likely get bigger and darker and until he is 9 mo to a year, then will get lighter and smaller until he is a toddler, then disappear. No bleeding though, and since its on his butt basically i am the only one who sees it.
  • Yes, my LO has one on her middle finger. Her's has not bled yet, but it is looking like it just might someday. Her pediatrician said that if it does bleed we could have it cauterized. Doesn't sound fun, but her ped assured me that it really was no big deal.

My LO doesn't have one but I have two friends that their daughters have them (one on her eyelid and the other on her back and private). They were both referred to specialists and put on propranolol (weird I know, but it works). But I believe that's only in unique cases (eye and private area) so as long as your LOs doesn't get larger or seem to be impeding on the eye then I'd say yes it'll eventually go away. My friends daughters are 2 and 3 and they look much much better from birth but have not completely gone away at this point. But they're not raised and dark just pink.
  • Hey ladies well took LO to the doctor and said if it keeps happening we could have it removed by a dermatologist or she could give propranolol but it is new for the treatment of hemangioma and you have to monitor babies heart rate and blood pressure so I think we are just gonna watch it for now and get it removed if it keeps bleeding.
  • DD has one on her shin. Dr said just be careful when she starts crawling because it may bleed because it's a thin layer of skin.
  • Ds has one on his forearm. My sister had a huge one on her back. It took til she was 7, but it faded away.
  • My daughter was born with one that, at a few days after birth, looked like a needle prick and at a year old was the size of a silver dollar and now, at seven years is the size of a pea and faded to mostly skin tone.  It never did bleed, probably because it was on her shoulder and did not get bumped a lot.
  • My son had one on back of head, it went away  by age 3.
