STM and FTM Gestational Diabetes input

Looking for some experiences regarding gestational diabetes. My doctor diagnosed me last Thursday and I'm getting used to the changes etc. I was curious to hear from those who have had previous pregnancies with gestational diabetes where you controlled your blood sugar levels according to your doctor. Those who are FTM's and have been diagnosed too please chime in too and share how you're feeling.

1) Did you go into labor before your due date?
2) What was the weight of your bundle of joy?
3) How did you overall feel? (emotionally and physically)

Just trying to learn more about others experiences (good and bad) as I'm the first in my family to be diagnosed with GD thanks ladies!

Re: STM and FTM Gestational Diabetes input

  • I had GD with my first (with this pregnancy I passed my first early test, have my 28 week test in two weeks)

    1) I was induced 2 days before my due date
    2) baby boy was a very healthy and average 7lbs 6 oz
    3) When I was first diagnosed I was an absolute mess! I thought it was my fault (it isn't!!!!!). However, once I got a hang of what I could eat and got in a routine I was fine. I missed ice cream though because I was diagnosed in the summer!

Physically I felt fine. Mine was controlled with diet and the smallest dosage of metformin possible to control my fasting numbers overnight.

There is a GD check in thread on the board now, good luck!

  • I had GD with my first, and though I passed the early test this pregnancy, I was recently diagnosed with it again about two weeks ago.

    1) I went into labor early at 36 weeks 2 days. Technically he was a premie, however he was perfect in every way, didn't need a NICU stay or anything aside from his little sun lamp in room with us for a short time.
    2) He was 6lbs 7oz. If I had gone another 3-4 weeks he likely would have been another pound or so. But wasn't a giant baby by any stretch of the imagination.
    3) When I first got the diagnosis I was upset and scared. The diabetes counseling class helped immensely with that, as did talking to my doctor. Learning that I could still eat the things I loved (and was craving!) but that I just needed to balance them with the right amounts of protein made me feel a lot better. Once I got acclimated to the diet (which for me meant eating a lot more than I was used to) I started to feel better, much less lethargic and physically less worn down because I wasn't fighting my body. I was diet and exercise controlled until near the end when I went on Glyburide (a pill) to help control the overnight fasting numbers (it's very common for those to be the ones you struggle with).

This time around I'm a little more relaxed about it, and I expected it would happen (90% chance of recurrence in subsequent pregnancies). My biggest struggle with 2.0 has been finding protein that I can eat that doesn't completely repulse me! Last time I ate a lot of hummus, peanut butter and chicken. All three of those are revolting to me right now sadly. Luckily I still have cheese!! And I've found a great (and not crazy expensive) protein powder that I can mix into oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies, etc. that my doctor approved. So that's helping a bit.

Definitely check out the GD thread that we have going weekly now. It can be scary and overwhelming at first, but you will get through it and I promise it will be worth it! Good luck

  • Thanks @mello13 and @LondontoSavannah! I'm not seeing the thread..could one of you post a link for me? I'd really like to check it out. Thanks again :)
  • I had 2 babies w/o GD and with the third I was GD and am currently GD.
    1) Did you go into labor before your due date? My water broke with #2 and #3 (one GD and one not GD), unknown why. The 36 weeker was 5lb. 9oz. and the 34 weeker was 5.7. So yes, the GD was "bigger" since she was two weeks earlier and practically the same size. Both healthy girls right from the start - very blessed.

    2) What was the weight of your bundle of joy? see above

    3) How did you overall feel? (emotionally and physically) I felt that I ate better and was more focused on being healthy. I gained 25 pounds with the first 2, and 13 pounds total with the GD #3, and have gained 6 pounds at 28 weeks with this one. I have not had any morning sickness, just eating healthy and keeping moving. I attribute feeling healthy to having a "check" system that doesn't allow me to be inconsistent or eat foods that don't work for me. I am diet controlled GD. No meds last time and no meds so far this time.
