Toddler with UTI and Potty Training regression

My 3 yr old son was almost totally potty trained and had a UTI about 10 days ago.
His symptoms were pain during urination (tears), I immediately thought about UTI bc in addition to tears he said "pee is warm". The day after his first symptom, he was prescribed antibiotics and the UTI resolved. However, he totally refuses to use the potty now. He wants nothing to do with it. I know it is not a good idea to force it bc it can bring more problems. he is associating it with pain. I don't know if I should just try each day or back off until he forgets and start over in a week? Right now he pees in his pant and just removes them after. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

DS was born in April 2012 at 31 weeks - 45 days in NICU
