Constipation?

Baby is 1 month old and saw the pediatrician yesterday. She's gaining weight abs everything is dandy, except she's got colic (which totally sucks). She is formula fed (gerber soy) and usually poops once every 24 hours... After a long,  miserable screaming fit she pooped tonight, but it wasn't soft, squishy, normal baby poop. It was much more formable; a non-squishy, solid, fairly large ball.

As far as my reading has gone, this is constipation, which makes sense with the tummy troubles she's been having. But I have no idea what to do about it... it's Friday night and Monday is a holiday, so the soonest I can contact her doctor would be Tuesday.

Any ideas on what I can do to give her some relief?

Re: Constipation?

  • Push fluids- formula is ideal but you could always call the pedi after hours line and ask if pedialyte is ok. Is she having 6+ wet diapers a day? She's probably just dehydrated but check with her dr to make sure

  • She is having tons of wet diapers. Probably closer to 8-10 or more in 24 hours. She's the baby that I change her wet diaper and she pees again before I can get her onesie snapped...
  • Aw so sorry you're dealing with this - I remember you posting about BF/formula and tummy issues before because it sounded so similar to the problems I had with dd. She had a lot of trouble with gas and constipation and the switch to try soy made the constipation so much worse. (We had to resort to glycerin suppositories at times - not fun!)
The only thing that helped was Karo syrup in her bottles - recommended by the grandmas and confirmed by her pediatrician. And for the gas we kept plenty of simethicone drops on hand.
Our current Dr. gave us samples of enfamil reguline for "digestive health and soft stools" and I was just thinking where was this when our daughter needed it! Maybe it would be a good formula for you to try?
  • Hmm then she shouldn't be dehydrated, which is good! I'd still probably call the pedi to just ask if there's anything you need to do for her or if it's just one of those things that needs to run its course.
  • I think I'll wait it out through tomorrow, just to make sure it isn't some fluke, or just a lousy day.

@Jessdub10 I'll have to look into that formula, I haven't heard of that one before... and maybe try small amounts of the Karo syrup over the weekend. I don't think her pediatrician has an after hours number, they just suggest to go to the hospital... it being a long weekend, I don't want her to be miserable (or more miserable due to this colic), but I also don't want to take her to the hospital.
  • You can take her temperature rectally to try to encourage a bowel movement. (My brother's baby had this issue and that was my physician mother's advice).

  • Benjamin had a ball of poo in his diaper when DH changed him in the middle of the night and his next poo today was nice and squishy. I would wait and see what the next one is like.
  • Today still seems thicker than it should be, but it wasn't a solid form. Hopefully, we're good! Thanks ladies! She was just so miserable...
  • My little guy is/was having issues too (4 weeks today). His stools were small and formed with an almost claylike consistency.  He didn't appear to be uncomfortable while having a bowel movement though.

I called the pedi after it went in for 3 days. She had us give him one oz of prune juice and 2 tablespoons water twice a day for a few days. It has given mixed results though. Some
diapers are more mushy (still thicker than usual though) and some are formed.

She then recommended we give him a probiotic everyday which we just started. We're going to give it a week and see if it helps.
