Kicking at night

So I did a quick search and didn't see this so if I'm repeating an already asked question I apologize...so LO is 14 weeks old and for the most part goes to bed with no real issue, he is EBF so he still gets up 2 or 3 times a night to feed, generally I get one long stretch and then 2 shorter ones before he is up for the day...last night however he woke up at around 2am not to eat but to kick, and wiggle, and kick and kick and kick...he kicked and wiggled for like 1.5hrs, he was a little bit fussy so I tried to feed/rock him but then when I put him back down he resumed his kicking/wiggling!  Had anyone else experienced this? Is it something I should be concerned about or is it just a phase? He is still swaddled and because he is so long he is in the large size which is a bit big but in the smaller size he couldn't stretch his legs out straight, I'm wondering if this could be the issue?

Errrr we've been having this too. I've always lumped it with the 4 month sleep regression as when my DD finishes a sleep cycle she wakes up and goes all nutty in the pack n play. What we've taken to doing is playing one of the soothers we have for her (we have the baby Einstein aquarium which is mounted via zip ties to the inside of the P&P as well as the Fischer Price, giraffe, elephant and gloworm- people went nuts on the stuffed animals). Anywho, we turn it on and if it keeps her attention get some more shut eye while she works herself out staring or kicking with the soother. When she starts to fuss we know she's ready for help to fall asleep and then can pick her up and rock her. We turn off or take out whatever she was using and give a prayer to the sleep gods that we get another decent stretch. Shes partially swaddled as well, so maybe that's it, but my bet is just he's alert and ready to party.

Edit: Bumping on the IPhone is ridiculous. I'm sick of autocorrect.

  • Mines on formula and is waking twice a night but in between that she kicks and bucks like a horse. She shakes her whole bassinet, it's usually because her paci fell out but sometimes she just does it just because..
  • We've been doing this dance everyday this week. I blame it on LO pooping less often than he's used to since that's the only change I've noticed in him.  He went from twice a day to once every two days. He'd usually go once in the middle of the night and I guess he wakes up to try and go? as long as he's not crying I just ignore him (not wanting to encourage him) and after about 30 minutes he gives up and goes back to sleep.
  • You and I are in the same boat! My LO is also EBF. He used to sleep through the night. But over the past 1.5 weeks, we are in the same pattern as you - one long stretch (8:30pm-1am), then up every 2 hrs until he's awake for the day at 6:30am. And like you, my LO is kicking and wiggling and cooing up a storm. I don't think it's any cause for concern (other than me being concerned about the drop in my work productivity, haha). My LO is so, so close to being able to roll over. I think that his new pattern of wakefulness has to do with this.

  • My baby is younger, 11 weeks. She sleeps 8 to 10 hours straight at night and is EBF. So waking up because she is does not seem to be a reason.

I had her kicking in the bed a few times. She can even speak/do little screams of excitement. As Pp said it happened for 4!reasons :
    - before going to bed at night, If I missed the window to put her to sleep and she is overtired (mom fail), I usually manage to get her to latch one more time between two screams and she eats until she is in a milk coma and sleeps through the night.
    - during a day nap, usually because a poop is coming and she cant sleep. I usually place her on my laps, speak with her, she will feed a little and the poop comes out in the next 20min, clean her, offer food again or put her back to sleep if she is not hungry.
    - a burp needs to get out
    - she is wet

  • Bridget has been doing this too.  It's been difficult to deal with because she wakes up and just wants to play.  Unfortunately, she doesn't want to play alone.  She just wants some company.

Glad to see this thread, we had this last night.  Kiddo stayed asleep, oddly enough, but writhed/wiggled/kicked/occasionally let out a cry, on and off, from after her 3am snack until 7 when she finally woke up for breakfast.  The first 2 sleep-cries, I picked her up and it was like an off-switch, instant sound asleep baby, then 10-15 minutes after putting her down she started back up again.  She stayed asleep and the cries would just be 1 wail and she'd stop, roll over and snooze some more, so I just tried (and failed) to sleep through it.
  • My LO does this but there's always a fart that comes out at the end right before be passes back out so I'm assuming he's just trying to push his gas out lol

My first thought was gas, too.
  • Mine does this as well and it's usually gas. I pick her up and burp her and that usually is the culprit. She will let out a burp and that calms her down enough to sleep.
  • Mine flails and kicks like crazy, he does best on his side and we started using the zipadee zip and it seems to help and he falls asleep much faster in it.
  • Thanks everyone for the ideas! I'll try the burp/gas angle tonight if it keeps up and see how that goes...we tried arms free last night and he just couldn't fall asleep like that, he was too excited that he had his hands free!
  • My son does this as well. He wakes up anytime between 1-3am and kicks and squirms for 20mins to an hour. Most of the time it's gas but sometimes he just wants to stretch out.
  • Rhys is 12w, and started rolling on his side last week.  I've woken up to him on his side a few times already.  He gets there by throwing his legs to the side.

Before last week, the flying legs were usually associated with farting and pooping.

This is my LO... Almost exactly the same!

Every new milestone always brought less sleep for my daughter. She would want to practice things all night.
This is the time they become so much more aware of things too. I would guess this is part of the 4 month wakeful period.
