Rolling Help!

My LO will be 22 weeks on Saturday. She's been rolling back to front since around Christmas, but still cannot roll from stomach to back. We finally got out of sleep regression/colds and had 3 nights of good sleep and then bam! She rolls back to front constantly, including at night! I give her lots of tummy time and try to practice rolling back but she's not there yet.

I blink and she rolls! She'll stay sometimes and we play that way and other times she just cries right away. No matter how much I roll her back she just rolls forward again. This kills me at night! I know she's practicing new skill but at night when I'm sleep deprived I'm just less patient because it causes her to wake up. And she's banged her head into the crib and toys during the day despite my efforts to clear area. I can't leave her for a second!
and I'm worried at night during the little time I do sleep.

Anyone gone through this or have any advice? I'm losing my mind!

Re: Rolling Help!

  • Does she cry at night when she flips to her belly? This one is a side and belly sleeper. Something I've just had to embrace.

  • Yes she does cry, so I have to go in. I'd be ok if she slept on stomach and am trying to show her to just turn her head.
  • Same problem here ha. I'm trying rolling a towel and shaping it like a U (you put it underneath the crib sheet). And then lay them kind of inside it. He isn't able to roll over that way.

  • Mine is 20 weeks and not rolling at all. Wish I had suggestions, but in just sitting here constantly concerned that something's wrong!
  • My LO is 21 weeks and has only rolled onto his side. He has yet to roll all the way over. Wish I could help, but we aren't even that far yet. Good luck!
  • Mine does the same thing but he is in a sleep sack at night and doesnt try to roll then.  Maybe try that? Its just a wearable blanket that wraps around their chest and velcros. His legs cant move enought to get started in a roll so it helps.
  • We went through this. He is 23 weeks still goes back to front but barely front to back even today. Been rolling since before Christmas and have had several sleepless nights and during day play he will roll instantly while on floor. At night now he's figured out how to get back on back but fakes it like he can't get back during the day. I know soon he'll coordinate it.
  • My baby went for several weeks just rolling onto his belly and then crying because he couldn't roll back. It almost seemed as if he couldn't help it! We'd put him down on his back and it was an instant flip to belly and then crying. I'd say about a week or two ago I noticed that he figured out how to roll from belly to back. Now he is suddenly much more in control. When we place him on his back he stays that way until he chooses to roll and hang out in his belly. When he's done he rolls back. Now if we put him on one end of a blanket he'll roll all the way to the other end. The point being, it takes them time to master their new skills. Your baby will figure it out soon enough!

My kiddo has just gotten into this. I place him in the crib very close to the side of the crib, not the middle, slightly angled so his face is away but his right foot and leg are against the rails. This seems to stop him from working up the momentum he needs to flip over as he only rolls to his right and needs to pull his legs up to roll. I tried putting all of his right side against the rails but poor guy would bump his head, so I tried angling it a bit so his head/face wouldn't bump.
It feels wrong putting him so close to the side, but if I don't he rolls until his face is wedged, like REALLY wedged by the rails and the mattress and it freaks me out and makes him scream cause he can't figure out how to roll back out of it.

  • Yes! We have been going through this for a few weeks. I got amazing advice about rolled up towels under the sheet and I do that only at night for my sanity. Prior to that I was rescuing him 30+ times a night-
during the day I let him practice and happily rescue him. He's a back to stomach roller- then panics
  • Try letting baby be naked to practice rolling. Whenever my LO has just his diaper on he rolls back and forth like crazy. I think having the play mat gym with the toys up high to reach for helped give him an incentive to roll as well.
