Medicine after BFP with IVF

*pregnancy mentioned*

Hi ladies I finally got my BFP after years of TTC. First attempt at IFV was successful. Now I am 6 weeks and my RE wants me to stay on endrometrium (progesterone) and estrace (estrogen) until my second trimester. I'm 100% OOP so these meds are 1,000 a month I can't afford. At what point can I move on like a normal pregnancy?

Re: Medicine after BFP with IVF

  • You will get more responses to this on the Pregnancy after IF board.  AFM - I was able to get my PIO and estrogen covered by insurance now that the medications are used to sustain a pregnancy, and aren't related to infertility anymore.  You may want to check in to that... My PIO went from 150 for three bottles to 50.
  • Thanks @Piperella how long are you supposed to be on it?

  • @Selena2016 - My RE said I was to be on PIO for 12weeks, so six more weeks to go.  I've seen a lot of people get taken off of it between 9-10 weeks. I'm on estrace (oral) 3x a day and my RE said I would be on that my entire pregnancy.  I don't know if he just told me that so I would stop asking when I could be taken off or not... I'm hoping I can come off both at 12 weeks, but I'll do whatever he tells me to do.

Same here, I did IVF (frozen transfer) and I have to stay on progesterone and estrogen for the first 12 weeks. I just started gradually reducing the dose last week as I will be 11 weeks tomorrow then that is two weeks to gradually stop.

I was on 400mg of progesterone x 2 daily and 400mg of estrogen every two days... So it was getting really expensive for us too. But it is not something you can avoid unfortunately.

  • Also, you could ask for donations. I know there are a lot of ladies who have come off Estrogen and PIO and still have left over they are trying to get rid of. Hopefully someone has some and is willing to share!

  • You're basically waiting for the placenta to develop to the point where it creates its own progesterone.  You didn't have a normal ovulation, so you don't have the corpus luteum manufacturing progesterone in your body (like it would with people who ovulate normally).

The placenta takes over around the time that you shift from first trimester to second.  That's also the point where a lot of women find that nausea gets better, if they've been dealing with nausea, because of the same milestone of placenta development.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
