DS took about 3 weeks to get back to his original birth weight. He was discharged from NICU at 4.13 that was 9 days after birth, and then at his 3 week check up he was 5.6.
my girl took less than two weeks. she was 4lbs 9oz at birth and dropped to 4lbs 2oz.. for me we feed her every three hours, i did what i could breast wise and pumped. while waiting for my supply to come in we do use formula. since she was so little. but now, we are 100% BF! i tough through the discomfort and pain and the the little pumping amounts but it's paying off.
I think every baby is different and it's not quite a science. My girl was back above birth weight within 5days of birth. But she cluster fed ALL those 5 days ( and still) and wouldn't go more than an hour without eating( rough)
2 weeks for us, after a slightly rocky start. To echo a PP, I think every baby is slightly different. My pediatrician told us not to stress too much, as long as she was eating frequently, had the right number of wet and dirty diapers, etc.
My little guy is a big eater (EBF) and was 1lb over birth weight at 5 days (8lb14oz at birth and 9lb14oz at 5 days). Now at almost 3 weeks old - he's 11lb 3oz (so 2lb 5oz) over birth weight.
Our little man dropped his 10% fast, and didn't gain any for a few days. However once we started supplementing and working through a plan with the pediatrician and LC he gained fast and weighed 1oz over today at 16 days. So we're celebrating!
I was amazed (and so were the doctors) that my baby didn't lose any weight before leaving the hospital (or after). At 4 days old, she had gained 2 oz. By 2 weeks old, she was up 1 lb from birth weight.
Our son only dropped about 5oz and had gained that back before the 2 week appointment where he gained 1lb 10ozs. So I'm not exactly sure how quick but not too long.
Lurker from F16 but just had our first pedi appt with our son and they said that the goal is to get them back up by the 2 wk appt. It also depends on if you FF, BF ( how long it takes for your milk to come in) or supplement and the pedi should take that into account too.
With our daughter, she lost more weight than she was supposed to due to trouble getting the hang of nursing but once we figured it out, she became a chunky baby with rolls on rolls, doubled her weight by 4 months, 16 lbs.
DS took 3 weeks but he had an infection in the hospital and wasn't discharged until he was 9 days old. I'm not sure if that had something to do with it. But his Dr said by about 2 weeks they should be back to their birth weight.
3 weeks- we had no health issues- it just took longer for whatever reason. Since then she has put on 2.5 pounds so she is making up for it. We are at 5 weeks now
DS1 took 2.5 - 3 weeks and I really stressed about it, taking him in for weekly weight checks. He lost about 10% of his body weight in the hospital and my milk took 5 days to come in. He was supplemented with small volumes of formula for the first 5 days due to jaundice. DS2 isn't quite two weeks old yet, but if he continues with his current weight gain trends it will take him about 2.5 weeks as well. My milk was in on day 2 this time and also supplemented with formula due to jaundice. But like big brother, he lost about 11% of body weight in the first two days. My boys just lose a lot of weight in the beginning! I'm not stressing about it this time. He's pooping, peeing, content & gaining - we'll get there!
My LO was back to his birth weight by his 10 day visit to the dr, but he's been cluster feeding since day 6 so that might have something to do with it.
Today was DS's 2 week appointment. He weighed in at 9 lbs 5 oz, up almost 2 lbs from his birth weight. I'm strictly breastfeeding and was worried he wasn't getting enough milk... Clearly not the case.
Baby was exactly her birth weight at her last doctors apt at 9 days old. I was relieved because she lost a lot of weight in the hospital before we decided to try supplementing with formula (now exclusively ff) so it makes me happy she's thriving and gaining at a good pace
My little one had a rough start with breastfeeding and lost over a pound the first week. Because I had a low supply he maintained his weight for the second week and now at 3 1/2 weeks we are 3oz shy of being back to birth weight. Excited to chubby him up!
Re: How long did it take baby to get back up to birth weight?
Now up 3 lbs at 6.5 weeks
