3rd Trimester

Medication to stop BH

Hi, ladies,

My doctor recommended a medication to me that would relax my uterus and stop me from having BH. She said it would not stop real labor contractions when the time comes. She said it's basically a hyped up Benadryl designed to ward off the ones that wake me up and keep me up at night and it's a take as needed type thing.

Has anyone taken anything similar? I'm a little nervous and tricking my body into not having them since I know they're intended to help get me ready for labor. On the other hand some of them are so painful I have to stop what I'm doing and I'm definitely over waking up a million times a night with them too.

Did you express your concerns to your doctor? If the medicine is recommended by your doctor, I would take it

  • I haven't heard of it, but I do know that lack of sleep increases mine. So if you're not sleeping it's just going to make them worse which causes you to not sleep...endless cycle. If it's not going to stop the real ones, I'd go ahead and take it because your body does need rest.

IDK my doctor was REALLY quick to offer me Zofran when I mentioned I felt nauseous at times during my first trimester. I was surprised because I wasn't even really complaining, actually getting sick or losing weight. Sometimes I think doctors are quick to offer medication if they think it's going to make you happy. I don't blame you for asking if anyone has personal experience.

HOWEVER, I agree with @drillsergeantcat - you need some rest so if the medication is going to provide that and it's okayed by the doc, I'd take it.

  • Yes, I mentioned it to her and she said it was fine but that doesn't mean it wouldn't mess with my body in some weird way. She's a little quick to offer meds and I'm hesitant to take them so it's a bit off a toss up haha.
  • I was given Nifedipine at 18 wks to take as needed for BH. Around 26wks I was getting several contractions (not just BH) so now I take it every six hours. My doctor told me its a low dose blood pressure med that just helps relax my uterus. The meds plus bedrest has made me feel better. I am now 29.5 wks.
  • honestly, i would take them. you said it was an "as needed" kind of thing, so maybe only take it on the days/nights that's it's really unbearable..? like PP's have said, you need your rest! & if it does happen to mess with your body in a way that you dont like, you can always just stop.
BH's are there to help your body prepare in a way, but i was assured that even if you dont feel/get BH's, your body will still know what to do.

have you spoken with youe doctor about all of these worries you have? maybe she would be able to give you some more answers or even an alternative that you'd be more comfortable with :)

My doc has been this way too. I respect him and think it's great to have the option of medication, but ultimately it's your body and baby and your decision. If your doc had told you to take it for a medical condition that was going to be very detrimental to you or the baby then I would 100% say take them for sure. This sounds more like something to keep you comfortable if you feel necessary. In that case I think it's up to what you feel comfortable with. Just because they offer it doesn't mean you should feel compelled to take it. If you are up all night every night then it's a medical issue. It's really your call.
  • I'm on it.  I take it as needed although they prescribed it for every 6-8 hours.  The only side effect is that it makes me MAD tired, but on the other hand, my migraines have diminished, which is great when all you can take is Tylenol.
