Tearing sensation above belly button?

Hey all, I am 37 wks and for the past few days have had increasing pain at the top of my belly button.  It feels like a ripping and burning sensation that hits in continuous waves throughout the day. It seems to get worse as time goes on. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Could be a hernia?

  • I have a feeling like that right below my belly button, where I have some pretty bad stretch marks. It burns! It's terrible.

I sure hope not! I don't see anything poking through but I'll keep it in mind when I talk to the doc.

I hope not too for you!  If the pain is bad enough it could be but hopefully that isn't what it is. :)

  • I have the same pain at the top of my abdomen, about two inches below my bra line, slightly to the left. It feels like a burning/ tearing sensation and is worse when I move a certain way or bend over. My doctor said it's an abdominal nerve that is being compressed due to the growth of my uterus and baby's movements. She said it is pretty common and will not cause any lasting damage- it just hurts. She suggested ice packs and careful repositioning. I don't know if that's what you're experiencing, but definitely talk to your doctor about it. Good luck, and feel better!

That sounds very similar to what I'm experiencing.  Baby is huge and I have high AFI so that would make sense.  Thank you! I will give the icepacks a try while I wait to talk to my doctor
  • I have this same exact pain, and I use tiger balm and rub it in when it's feeling really bad, and it seems to help for a while. Mine gets worse when I squat or bend down. My OB said that it's usually from a muscle tear and not to expect much relief until after the baby is born because the muscle with likely continue to stretch and tear. He said sometimes they can get bad enough to cause actual bruising and/or redness on your skin.
  • It could be abdominal muscle separation. Have you lifted anything heavy lately? I have it from lifting my DS in the first & second half of my pregnancy.

  • Are your blood pressures good? Severe pain in that region was given to me as something to watch out for in combination with my high BP. Id call your dr just incase but it sounds like a lot of other women are having the same painful (but not serious) issue. fx it gets better soon!

  • Thanks ladies for all the advice!  I saw my OB and she said it was a fairly common complaint.  Apparently the skin around the belly button is thinner and therefore hurts a hell of a lot to be stretched too far.  In other news baby boy is being delivered via C-Section tomorrow instead of the 22nd!  Fingers crossed that everything goes okay . I can't wait to meet him!
  • Good luck today!
