Flat Spots

Anyone dealing with one? My LO has a preferred side. He avoids laying on the side where he was vacuumed, go figure. Our pedi suggested we get a Tortle to avoid the helmet. He's 9.5 weeks, so I'm hoping we can fix this early.  Any STMs have experience or Anyone dealing with the same thing?

Re: Flat Spots

  • FTM, so no advice. I am curious about this as well. I noticed that the back of my sons head looks flatter now that he sleeps in his bassinet. My pediatrician didn't say anything. How do I know if this is a problem?
When my son first came home from the hospital he slept on his side and my doctor suggested we try and rotate him so his head would not become misshapen.

  • My son has a flat spot on the back of his head. Pedi checked neck muscles and all was well, so she said don't worry about it. He will start to move his head on his own and it'll go away.  However if you're concerned I'd have it checked, every baby is different.
  • Anna has a tiny spot on her side of her head and then a bigger one on her back of her head.

The side one is getting better. When she falls asleep on me I will move her head to one side . The back of her head will get better once she's sitting up etc

  • Elliot has a flat spot because she prefers one side. I try to lay her down where the tv or something flashy is on the side she doesn't like, that way she looks to the other side. Our doctor said it isn't bad but she showed us a few neck exercises we could do with her . When I lay her down in her bassinet, i put her on the other side and I go pump before bed. When I check on her before I lay down she's on the flat side again.... she just really prefers that side. I try all I can.
  • At his 2 month visit, pedi checked his neck muscles and said they were just fine. He suggested the Tortle anyways. He mentioned the helmet was expensive and insurance won't help much. LO hates it, but I'm sure he'd be more uncomfortable in a big plastic helmet.

DD has a preferred side and a flat spot on that side.  Ped mentioned it but said to just do some neck exercises (which she hated at first, so I can tell they were needed.  They're getting more and more tolerable by the day).  I hold her upright on my shoulder more often than not these days, so hopefully that helps, too.  I tried laying her down 'upside-down' in the pnp so she'd have to turn the other way to face me, but she just screams b/c she can't find me.  Sigh.  I should probably keep trying that.
  • My baby was born with tortacolis secondary to her position while in utero. We were given stretches to perform after each diapee change to lengthen her tightened neck muscles. we also rearranged her crib and all of her toys to encourage her to turn to her non preferred side. Her flattened side was resolved over the course of many weeks without a helmet
  • DD always preferred one side when she was born. Our pediatrician told us to turn her head to the other side with each diaper change. In a matter of days DD stopped favoring the one side, but then she never laid with the back of her head down, it was always to one side. So any time I held her I turned her face straight up to the ceiling. Again in a matter of days she started naturally sleeping/laying in this position. Luckily with this work early on we've avoided flat spots!

Take your baby to a chiropractor  they can gently adjust baby's  neck to help, also getting them on their tummy as much as possible during the day and make sure they are sleeping in a firm surface  such as a crib rather than a rock n play ect.

Edited because I've been awake far too long and spelling is hard on no sleep lol
