  • I always opt in for genetic testing. I think it would definitely be frightening and stressful to have a false positive, but knowing myself, I'd rather follow up on the false positive and know what's going on than be in the dark. After birth, I'd hate to find out that there was something we could have researched, prepared, and accounted for in advance.

  • I'm on the fence myself. I'm already a worrier by nature, so I don't know if it will ease my worry or make it worse. My OBGYN knows me and my whole family well, so I'm going to have an honest discussion with her and see what she thinks. She's always been great about keeping my head on straight, making sure I don't overreact to things that may sound scary but are actually totally normal. I haven't talked to DH about it yet either, though he tends to defer to me to decide anything like this. I think having the conversation at the doc appointment in a couple of days with DH, doc and myself will help him understand it more.

  • Sorry to revive a semi-dead thread.  I wanted to see if anyone had experience with the Counsyl test?  From what my doctor said, it's a blood test of the mom to find out if you're a carrier for any diseases.  If the mom comes back a carrier, then they blood test the dad to see if he is a carrier.  If both are, then additional tests can be done for the baby.

Just curious if anyone has any experiences.  Sounds like it's pretty definitive (you're either a carrier or your not, not a you might be a carrier thing).

  • @Tennis11785 My NIPT test was done with Counsyl at 10 weeks, and I'm glad I did it. The turnaround time was 8 days. I don't have any experience with their carrier screening you're describing, but I was happy with the speed/customer service for the NIPT.

  • Yes, I am doing genetic testing. We would terminate if anything was seriously wrong, and it's important to me that I be as informed as possible.
