Spitting/throwing up

Okay, what's normal in the world of spit up? LO wants to eat literally all. day. long. which wouldn't bother me except that she will spit up after every feeding unless you hold her upright for about an hour and get a really good burp out of her and even then there is usually spit up. I would consider this normal, but for the past 3 nights right before bedtime she has thrown up a ton- like projectile, soaking herself, me, and our sheets. Last night I tried to be really careful not to over feed her and she still did it and then wanted to eat again right after! I can't hold her upright against my chest without her rooting and getting upset if I don't get my boob out. I've tried spacing out feedings, using the paci more, block feeding, cutting out dairy, and keeping her upright as long as possible, but it's like all this girl wants is to eat eat eat and then throw up. She didn't seem too bothered by the spitting/throwing up until last night and then she was fussy pretty much all through the night.

Is anyone else going through this or have any advice?

Re: Spitting/throwing up

  • Projectile spit up makes me think she may have GERD and you should talk to her pediatrician.

  • How old is she? I would see your pediatrician.  If the projectile vomit becomes more frequent and more forceful it could be something called pyloric stenosis.  My son had it, started when he was about 4 1/2 weeks and took another week and a half for me to convince the doctors that it wasn't normal reflux spitting up.
  • While we don't have the projectile throwing up like you mentioned, we do have a spitter. And sometimes it's an hour after a feeding, if we're lucky enough to make it that far before starting the next one    I looked online and found a pretty good resource (https://kellymom.com/hot-topics/reflux/) which helped answer some questions DH and I had. For peace of mind, I would probably give a call tot he ped regarding her violent throwing up. Sorry I'm not much help!

  • Agreed with talking to a doctor. Projectile spitting up is not normal and may require intervention beyond diet, sitting upright etc.
  • Thank you for the input. She will be two weeks tomorrow. I mentioned it to the pedi at her last appt but at that point she had only done the projectile thing once. She was back up to birth weight by 4 days old and is now 9lb4oz, and I think the pedi kind of blew it off because she's gaining so well. We have to go back to get her belly button checked so I will bring it up again.
  • This!!! I was literally going to post about this today myself! My girl is doing the same
thing. I fed her this morning and she spit up 4 times within less than an hour. And then she was hungry again (of course!) she's 17 days old. We have her peds appointment tomorrow and we were planning on bringing it up then especially after this morning....hopefully it all gets figured out! (For all our sakes!)
  • I should also add that LO seems to have a bit of a lip tie and I have an oversupply, but I've been making sure to get a great latch at every feeding and will unlatch her in the beginning during letdown if it's too forceful, so I'm not sure if those things are contributing or not.

Glad I'm not alone! I feel like a crazy person because everyone is like "it's good she's such a great eater," but I'm like not if she's projectile vomiting half of it up!
  • I had to be a little persistent with my Pedi. about my sons issue.  When the formula change didn't quite resolve all of our issues, I knew there was something else that he needed.  He is now on an antacid medicine 3x a day.  It hasn't eliminated all of the spitting up, but it has helped a ton, and he isn't experiencing such discomfort from doing it.

He too was gaining weight and peeing and pooping regularly, but I wasn't going to just let the doctor tell me that was okay and to disregard the issue.  I tried holding him upright, burping more in between feedings, etc.  It was helping a little bit, but if he spit up a good majority of his 3oz bottle, I knew I'd be feeding him again within 1-2 hours, and it was become a vicious cycle.  Because he was spitting up so much, his esophagus was getting irritated and he'd cry, which would irritate it more and the spitting up would become more frequent.  The medicine has def. helped.

It sounds like you're EBF? I ask, because my dr. recommended for every 2oz of formula, to put a tsp. of rice cereal in it.  It would thicken up the formula and help to keep it down in his belly.
  • yeah, I've been only breast feeding. @WineBaby122 have you as well?
  • I am having the same problem. Definitely have an oversupply in which my little girl thinks she needs to eat it all! While at a breastfeeding group today, she threw up so much that my tank top, jeans, undies and sweatshirt were completely soaked. Not to mention that the lactation specialist running the class said she has never seen something like that. Then after all that, she still gained 4oz after feeding. :( I just feel so bad that I have too much and she throws up so bad.
