PCOS and diet

Hi all - so a few weeks ago my husband and I started the Whole 30 diet and didn't cheat for a week, but after that we kinda gave up. Anyway, I felt really good during that week. So this past Sunday I noticed EWCM and my nipples became really sore, which happens 14 days exactly before AF arrives. I'm pretty psyched because I was going to have to go on Provera to bring on a period so I could start Letrozole again, but now I won't have to. I'm wondering if even just a week of Whole30 got things hormonally in order for a new cycle to start? No idea if it's related but figured I'd throw it out there in case anyone with PCOS was looking for a diet that could be helpful.

Me: 33, PCOS with anovulation
DH: 36, No known issues
TTC since 11/2014
1000mg Metformin daily

Oct-Dec 2015: Letrozole 5mg, Ovidrel, TI = BFN x 2
Feb-May 2016: Letrozole 5mg, Ovidrel, TI, Prometrium = BFN x 3
August 2016: Clomid 100mg no response, Letrozole 5mg, Ovidrel, TI, Prometrium = BFN

Re: PCOS and diet

  • Hi!
What kind of diet is that?
Yay for not having to take any extra medicine to get started!

  • @LizzieJ13 I am on day 20 of my Whole30! I started it to see if it would help my Endometriosis symptoms and I have noticed that I'm not having the pain like I was before.  I'm really hoping it will help get my hormones regulated.  Did you read "It Starts With Food" when you started?  If not, I definitely recommend it!

  • @kaityh1 I didn't read it, but I have the hardcover that includes the cookbook, which I think has the same info? It really came down to lack of preparation - my husband and I are both in really busy times at work, and just didn't put in the effort, mostly for lunches. Anyway, glad it's helping you! I think we're going to give it another go. I mean I have no real proof that just a week helped, but it seems like it could be connected as I am responded similarly to a low-carb diet before. Congrats on making it to Day 20!!

@tvh1982 Whole30 eliminates dairy, grains, legumes, alcohol, and sugar.

  • Ah I see. Well I'm a vegetarian, so that's not a diet for me. But don't consume 3 out of 5...so that's pretty good
GL with your diets and journey ladies!

  • Thanks for posting @LizzieJ13! Trying to prepare my body to get this show on the road, and this looks like a good way to that! Think I'm going to try it out!

@kaityh1 congrats on making it to day 20! Really encouraging to hear that it seems to be working for you! Any words of advice before I take the plunge?

  • @babylonghorn16 I would definitely recommend reading "It Starts With Food" by the Hartwigs.  It breaks down the "why" part of the Whole30.  Then there is another book ("The Whole30") that is the "how" part.  And definitely meal prep.. it helped me a lot.  I pre-make most of my meals on Sunday so I have breakfast and lunches to heat up and I can just pop dinner in the oven when I get home from work.  I still have awful cravings (I actually had dreams about drinking Starbucks!) and just keep reminding myself of why I started and that it is only 30 days.  If you and @LizzieJ13 want to swap recipes or anything, let me know!
