3rd Trimester

Possible birth at 33 weeks

I went for a normal check up today at my OB, they sent me over to the hospital because my blood pressure was high they wanted to run some tests, they did a non stress test and the babies movement and heart rate was perfect. They told me I had preclampsia and sent me home with jugs to collect urine in for 24 hours...I have to be back tomorrow am at 1130 ! They said if there is still protein in my blood by the end of this week they would induce me. They gave me a steroid to develop babies lungs faster he is already 4lbs 12oz and I am only 33 weeks. Any advice please I am super nervous for what tomorrow will bring

Re: Possible birth at 33 weeks

  • No advice for you, but hoping that you are able to bake that baby a bit longer!

  • No advice either, but good luck! I hope everything for both you and baby turns out well!
  • Thank you guys xo hoping for the best !

  • I had a very similar situation-- got sent home with 24 hour urine collection as well, but everything came back fine. Just because you have to go through the tests doesn't mean it will end in a bad way. There's a chance it could come back just fine and that baby will keep cooking! Good luck!
  • I too had elevated BP and some protein in my urine. I did a 24 hr urine a few days later and was diagnosed with Pre-E, but a mild case. My labs all came back normal so they have been monitoring me more closely since then. I was 32 weeks at that time. Since then my BP has been fluctuating and I have been taken off work and we have decided to induce at 37 weeks, unless something decides to go crazy. I am now at 35 weeks and doing weekly appointments with NSTs and at least one more u/s.

Hoping for a positive outcome for your situation. Keep us updated!

  • I didn't have preeclampsia, but delivered a 34w'er with no reasoning behind it. FTM, all tests and labs during pregnancy came back good, I had a next to perfect pregnancy. I was happy, eating right, etc.

Anyway, my water had broke on a Sunday morning and that's what started it all. He was born that Wednesday. He spent 9 days in the NICU, and while I thought it would be the hardest thing I'd ever experience, it wasn't too bad at all. The nurses and doctors did an amazing job with easing our minds and taking the best care of our son. He's now 7w, 1w adjusted, and other than some reflux/stomach sensitivity, (that the doctors and from most articles I've read, say he will outgrow as time goes on) he's doing fantastic. He did not need shots or any other extra supports while in NICU, other than a day under the lights for bilirubin levels.

Good luck to to you and I hope that everything turns out well!
  • 33 week babies do very well. The steroid injection really helps! My first was born at 34 weeks and had minor breathing issues. He's now a healthy and very active 6 yr old. Good luck!!
  • Thank you everyone for your advice and input ! I had another appointment today and as long as my symptoms do not get worse I will carry him til 37 weeks which is only 3 weeks
Do you have an update? How did everything go?
  • He's still cooking in there for now !!! My blood pressure seems to not be going down and swelling getting worse but my labs are okay they are just keeping a close eye on me for now!

  • Hang in there! Our boys were born at 35 + 2 and only needed 10 days in the NICU. If you do end up with NICU time, there are a lot of silver linings. As the NICU NP above said, babies born at this point tend to do really well in the NICU. I hope yours stays put for as long as possible, and I have no doubt you'll be in great hands. :)

  • Try not to panic. Obviously it's never an amazing situation to deliver at 33 weeks but your baby will most likely do well. I gave birth to my twins at 33 weeks and at 3 lbs a pop. They were in the nursery for 3 weeks to feed and grow and to get their bradycardia episodes under control. Hopefully your blood work will look good and you will not need to deliver early, but if you do, it can be done. My girls are normal happy healthy 21/2 yr olds now.
  • This happened to my sister last year. She was able to carry to just under 35 weeks but with a lot of hospital visits in the last few weeks. If I were you I would get hospital bags packed and be ready every time you go in to have the baby. When my sister delivered (by c section as baby was breech) she had no idea that that would be the day, but it was no longer safe for the pregnancy to continue. Her baby was in the nicu for a bit due to being unable to breastfeed or bottle feed at first but did great. Good luck and hugs!
  • Hope the induction goes well tomorrow, @missmonicax3 !!!
  • Good luck tomorrow @missmonicax3
