TTC After a Loss

Sending tissue for testing

So. These may be stupid questions, and I apologize if they are :/

I had a MMC back in October. My OB told me they were sending out tissue for testing. Since then I have asked several times during follow up appointments, via phone message and via their patient email program about my results. I was told my doctor would get back to me.  I haven't heard back. So here are my questions:

1) has anyone here sent out tissue for testing after a MC? Did you find it helpful to have that information?

2) How long did it take for results to come back

3) Did you have to harass your doctor for the results?

I'm trying to decide whether I should bother calling/emailing one more time. Any info on this experience is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: Sending tissue for testing

  • First of all, I'm sorry for your loss and secondly I'm sorry for how you're being treated!

Your dr should have gotten you the info, and if not, when you requested if you should've gotten answers. With that being said, so many of the times, there aren't any answers that come from the testing unfortunately. Results at my hospital take 7-10 days.

I would keep pushing, and if you don't get answers I would highly suggest getting a new ob. Gl!

  • I am so sorry for your loss. My answers below.

    1) has anyone here sent out tissue for testing after a MC? Did you find it helpful to have that information?-yes, I have had two mmc and sent both for testing. The first was inconclusive and the second gave me an answer (turners syndrome). Having an inconclusive sucked. I was glad when the second gave me a reason for the loss.

    2) How long did it take for results to come back?- The results took about a month.

    3) Did you have to harass your doctor for the results?- No, he set my expectations to one month and called me himself a little after 3 weeks.

  • Thank you ladies! That's very helpful. I wasn't sure if I was being an irrational crazy person (as I often am ;) ) I'm so sorry to hear about your losses as well.

I'm trying to decide whether I should switch OBs. I like her but her office is an unorganized hot mess since the second OB in the office retired. The other issue is that she promised to monitor my progesterone levels (I had super low levels before) with my next BFP. I don't think a new OB will do that until I've had two or three MC, and frankly I'd prefer not to risk it.
  • I had a d&e for my MC on Friday Oct 23 and it was tested, but mainly because they suspected it to be a molar pregnancy.  I heard back on Monday that it was just a regular MC.  My doctor was wonderful!  But, I don't know if I heard so early because of the suspected complication, or not?  I don't think they tested for any other complications or reasons though, besides the molar.  Not sure if this helps you or not?

I am sorry for your loss. They recommended the testing as this was my 2nd MC in a short span of time. I was told it would take a month. And at my month checkup, my doctor told me there was nothing "obviously wrong." He said that didn't mean there wasn't something wrong, but that the results didn't show anything. So, pretty frustrating to basically say there was no answer. I am glad I had it done in the off chance that it gave me an answer. I have a feeling these tests may vary a bit from hospital to hospital.

    I wish you the best!
  • @dpjennifer  @silentP  Thank you ladies, I appreciate the input :)
  • My dr just emailed today (4 weeks exactly since my d&c) that the results were in from our testing, but they were "inconclusive" :(
  • I'm still waiting on my results. It's been 3 weeks. The doctor said it could be 4-6 weeks.
  • If you're not comfortable with your OBs office it may be worth asking people in your area for other recommendations.  If you found someone you could always make an appointment and ask how they might manage a future pregnancy in your situation (if the primary concern is re: progesterone).
  • It took maybe 10 days for my doc to call me, but since it turned out to be a (partial) molar, it may have been more obvious what was wrong (visual appearance of molar, had a heartbeat briefly, so partial and not complete).  I didn't even know that it would be tested, honestly, so was definitely surprised that it was so quick.

Thanks ladies. It's been almost 4 months. I have a follow up appointment to check on a cyst in two weeks. I'll refuse to leave until they give me my results ;)
