Not feeling a lot of movement at 27 weeks

I know I probably shouldn't worry yet but I can't really help it... I'm 27 weeks and I feel like I should feel the baby move more. I do feel the baby occasionally but it's not really very strong. I do have an anterior placenta but I thought by now I would be feeling stronger more regular movement.

Re: Not feeling a lot of movement at 27 weeks

  • It really depends on how baby is positioned when you have an anterior placenta. A friend of a friend had an anterior placenta and their girl was usually facing mom's back, so she barely felt anything throughout the pregnancy, and her husband never got to feel baby move. I have an anterior placenta too, but a completely sifferent experience. I started feeling movement around 18 weeks, and DH has been able to feel it since around 20 weeks (amd for the past two weeks, simce week 25, we can see some movement from outside). However, there are times when I know he's turned around because I can barely feel a thing, usually for 2-3 days at a time.

  • I rarely felt my son move...the entire pregnancy. I may have felt him move once one day and not again for 5 days. I understand how scary that is, but it does happen!
  • Another mom to be said the same thing in this weekends ticker change post. Makes me think that *maybe* 27 weeks is a growth spurt week, so LO might be sleeping ??

Obv. if you are very concerned, call the doctor.

As PP have also stated, movement depends on baby placement and the placenta location.  I have an anterior placenta. I feel little movements from time to time, but nothing like what others describe on these boards ("my baby is punching me in the bladder!" "My baby is dancing today!") No, that is not my experience, although I wish it was!

ETA: I am 26 weeks today.
    Me: 38; DH: 41
    DS: Born 5-17-16

As PPs have said, the anterior placenta could explain it, as could a growth spurt (generally there is one between 25-28 weeks and again around 33 weeks). If you really feel like something is wrong and you're not feeling movement, you could call your doctor to be on the safe side.
  • I'm 26 weeks, no anterior placenta, but I'm not getting a lot of those harder/constant kicks and punches either- at least not that I can feel and my husband hasn't been able to feel anything at all yet.  I do get occasional movement, but it's reasonably gentle, and only a little stronger when baby flips.

I am tall with a long torso and overweight though, which can both impact the feeling of the kicks- more room for babyand more padding against the kicks.
  • If your concerned go to the hospital .. I don't mean to scare you but my first pregnancy I always felt like I should be feeling more movement. And I hardly ever did. Maybe every couple days and they were very weak. It was my first pregnancy and I wasn't sure what was normal, and I even kept mentioning it to my doctor and they told me I was fine. Then I finally went to the hopsital because my mother actually told me I should be feeling her more and we went in and she stopped growing.. And eventually her heart stopped beating and she was born silent at 28 weeks.
I did not have a anterior placenta like you so I can't offer a lot of advice there, but mothers intuition is real. If your worried, call. I should I have done it much sooner and maybe could have stopped something from happening. It doesn't hurt to go and get your LO checked out.

At 25 weeks I stopped feeling movement and tried not to psych myself out, no anterior placenta, and chalked it up to a growth spurt, but I still felt uneasy the more time went by (4 days). I happened to be seeing my doctor right after those few days and she agreed, nothing got be worried about just probably a growth spurt and she was able to find the heartbeat right away on the monitor. Sure enough, baby boy started back to his regular partying soon after that.

Keeping calm is easier said than done, but if you're super worried call your doctor and speak to them or a nurse even to help ease your mind or schedule an appointment. You wouldn't be the first mom to be making a phone call like that :)

  • I don't have experience with this as my placenta placement allows me to feel every movement DS makes, but I will say that one of my best friends had an anterior placenta and hardly ever felt her baby move. She now has a very healthy 11 month old. I don't think a call to your Dr would hurt at all, even if it is just to get some reassurance.

I have anterior placenta, but I know mine is located high (I asked the tech).  I just really started feeling "movement" this past week.  It's not a constant thing, but every now and then she will have a dance party and I'll feel the movement located either really low or off to the side.  I don't feel a whole lot as far as how hard the movement is -  just a lot of flutters.  I will be 24weeks on Wednesday.   I am totally assuming that these flutters are baby moving.

  • I wouldn't worry much but call your doctor as others have said if you are concerned. My placenta is also anterior and I started feeling her around 21 weeks, felt quite a bit around 23 and it slowly tapered off now at 25 weeks I feel her more often. I think babies go through their own spurts and its never the same for any pregnant woman. I always drink something super cold or try to rub my belly to feel some movements. Doesn't always work but may be worth a try.
  • I just went through something like this. I have and anterior placenta and have been feeling tons of movement to the point the see him kicking through my shirt. Last Monday was no different. Tuesday, nothing. By Wednesday morning I called my dr just to get an opinion. They brought me in and checked him out, everything seemed fine, but they ordered an ultrasound for that Friday to double check everything. I went in Friday and he is fine!  Healthy, moving, etc. The tech told me he had completely switched positions on me and he was facing my spine now. This was why I wasn't feeling the movements like I was before. That and my anterior placenta. Totally made sense, and put my mind at ease. I'm 27 weeks and he's right on for weight and measurements.

Yep, that was me! I also have an anterior placenta. I'm still feeling some movement, just less. I think he may have just changed positions. I was going to ask my doctor at my next appointment when I should be concerned and/or when I could start accurately doing kick counts.

  • Certainly call your dr to be sure, but I would be more concerned if you noticed a change in what you were feeling vs never having felt bigger movements. Placenta placement and baby positioning, as many pp's have said, makes a huge difference. GL!
