1st Trimester

Low Progesterone....

I had started brown spotting/bleeding so went in for ultrasound when it had some red blood spots in it, well after ultrasound they measured yolk sac at 5w2d and took blood.
Got results that I have low progesterone and I am bleeding red now (Not enough to covet a panty liner but not spots. Maybe transvag. US caused it to be more red and more?)
Anyways. I was prescribed progesterone pills. 200mg 3 times a day orally.

Could the bleeding or spotting been because of low progesterone? I have only taken one pill today so no changes yet, but curious if anyone thinks this will help the bleeding AND keep from miscarrying?

Re: Low Progesterone....

  • Look around in other posts there are many asking the same thing. Progesterone will not prevent a miscarriage sorry. I had one even though I was on progesterone. It will help "support" the baby because your body depends on it more until the placenta takes over. I had to take mine vaginally due to spotting. I was on modified bed rest as well during first tri due to spotting which didn't stop till 16 wks. I was told I had a friable cervix.

Hang in there and keep talking to your doctor. Try to stay positive. I went threw all this and I am just starting my third tri. Best wishes!!!

If the spotting is just due to low progesterone then the pills should help stop it but if your it body is miscarrying because of other issues then it won't matter to much. I took progesterone for the first 11 weeks because I had my corpus luteum cyst rupture and that can cause low progesterone but I never had any spotting. I hope stops it the spotting for you, are they going to draw another progesterone level in a week or so?

  • I had to use the progesterone vaginally as well early on . My first pregnancy I had bleeding that was completely unrelated due to a SCH.
