ZIKA virus?

Re: ZIKA virus?

  • Definitely agree that avoiding any of the affected countries while pregnant is a good idea...even if they don't know for sure whether or not the Zika virus actually causes microcephaly or not. Better to be safe than sorry. However, I just think that correlation does not equal causation and some media outlets have made it seem like the link is 100% definitive, when it's actually not (thus far).
  • I just read that there are 9 cases in Florida. We're supposed to be going to Disney in a month and it's got me worried.
So far, the cases have NOT been contracted in Florida, it's been travelers only (I'm in central Florida about 90 min from Disney). Luckily most of these have been in South Florida, not in Orlando yet. There have been two in the county next to me, but again, everyone traveled to another area. Definitely keep your eyes and ears open, but Florida so far is pretty safe. Also, Disney itself does do a great job of spraying for mosquitoes generally. Every little bit helps, right?

  • Remember Ebola... Sometimes I think they make a bigger deal out of things than it actually is. Not to say I wouldn't take precaution but still...

We're going to stay with my Dad in Tampa for a few days also and I read that one of the case was in Hillsborough so there's that too. I'm sure I'll be fine but it's still scary.

    Edit: phone was being dumb
  • Obviously but I think the risk factors are smaller and sometimes media does blow things out of proportion.
  • I'm just saying that sometimes things are blown out of proportion. It's quite rare in the U.S. unless you have travelled.... Just stating I wouldn't be too stressed at home as sometimes media does cause people to freak out more than we need to

No one has contracted it here except through sex. However, the WHO/CDC/NIH are expecting it to be here sooner rather than later. If it makes it here by summer, the NIH estimates 200 million Americans are living in potential areas of infestation. The WHO doesn't issue states of emergency just for the fun of it.

ETA no one has contracted it here through Mosquitos, YET.

It is winter, just wait for summer then see what happens.

  • Just FYI although the CDC hasn't changed their testing guidelines for pregnant women (only symptomatic will be tested), NY state is offering tests to all pregnant women who have traveled in affected areas: https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-announces-additional-state-actions-combat-and-address-zika

I know there were some people on here and the Caribbean travel thread who were frustrated at the lack of testing options. Will post there too.

I'm just gonna jump on here and say this.  I am following this thread for information, but I have to say that you guys are just being hateful.  You don't have kick a girl while she's down just because you don't agree with her statements, especially when they're as innocent as calling out media and the way they CAN blow things out of proportions.  If you don't agree with someone  move on and post your information for those that do want your info.  I'm just sayin'.

  • Florida is also providing testing to asymptomatic women who have traveled, according to reports about the Governor's speech (which I have not watched).

@elenabrent that's actually already happened in Sydney, Australia. They've found the mosquitos that carry them inside the airport, when usually they only live in tiny pockets of far north Queensland. I live an hours flight from Sydney so hopefully I'm okish

ETA: They've started spraying the planes and treating the water to try and kill the mosquitos before they get out.

Little boy due July 31st 2016

  • @LilLambie what's the weather like in Australia right now ? Still summer right ? Goodluck you'll be in my thoughts! ):
  • There's two confirmed cases here in Ireland ,its crazy to think something so far away can hit so close to home!
