Keep in mind that bug spraying clothing, shoes, and bags can significantly help repel mosquitos without having to breathe in the initial spray or have direct skin contact with bug sprays. DH and I DEET spray the hell out of hiking gear outside and let it sit for a few before putting it on and then use safer, more natural bug repellents on our skin when we are outside in really buggy, swampy areas. Be safe out there!
Definitely agree that avoiding any of the affected countries while pregnant is a good idea...even if they don't know for sure whether or not the Zika virus actually causes microcephaly or not. Better to be safe than sorry. However, I just think that correlation does not equal causation and some media outlets have made it seem like the link is 100% definitive, when it's actually not (thus far).
I just read that there are 9 cases in Florida. We're supposed to be going to Disney in a month and it's got me worried.
So far, the cases have NOT been contracted in Florida, it's been travelers only (I'm in central Florida about 90 min from Disney). Luckily most of these have been in South Florida, not in Orlando yet. There have been two in the county next to me, but again, everyone traveled to another area. Definitely keep your eyes and ears open, but Florida so far is pretty safe. Also, Disney itself does do a great job of spraying for mosquitoes generally. Every little bit helps, right?

Agreed. I work within Disney grounds and can't remember the last time I got a mosquito bite while at the park. If you are staying on property, you're good. If there was an active case of Zika in Orlando you would definitely be hearing about it, not only from me on these boards, but the media as it's the number 1 family tourist destination in the world. (Remember the measles outbreak?)
We're going to stay with my Dad in Tampa for a few days also and I read that one of the case was in Hillsborough so there's that too. I'm sure I'll be fine but it's still scary.
Ebola and Zika are two completely different things and are spread in completely different manners. People who understood the fear-mongering about Ebola have legit concerns about Zika. I'm not encouraging panic but this is the time to be cautious and learn about it and prepare, not blow it off and be ignorant.
I'm just saying that sometimes things are blown out of proportion. It's quite rare in the U.S. unless you have travelled.... Just stating I wouldn't be too stressed at home as sometimes media does cause people to freak out more than we need to

No one has contracted it here except through sex. However, the WHO/CDC/NIH are expecting it to be here sooner rather than later. If it makes it here by summer, the NIH estimates 200 million Americans are living in potential areas of infestation. The WHO doesn't issue states of emergency just for the fun of it.
ETA no one has contracted it here through Mosquitos, YET.

It is winter, just wait for summer then see what happens.
I think we should wait till it spreads North America wide then start talking about it, researching a vaccine, etc. That makes more sense, why try to get a jump on something and bring awareness when it's only impacted people other than us.
Yes because when people die from diseases as long as it's not in my country we shouldn't care right ? Because people dying from Ebola psh just an over reaction.. This seems to be a few peoples here mentality.
I'm going to stay in the all lives should matter camp and if people are sftruggling over seas we need to make it a big deal they don't all have the privilege of modern medicine, vaccines and just because you think you live in a bubble doesn't make you safe... Ugh the irritation of this ones posts today is strong...
Besides the whole "being an empathetic human" angle and feeling for the large part of the world that has been absolutely devastated by ebola in recent years, it's also important to remember that Zika is being carried by mosquitos WHO CAN FLY. It's one thing to make sure infected humans don't get onto a plane. We can't actually gate check the bugs. Who can easily get here from the parts of the world they are currently ravaging.

As well, we are all aware that there are bumpies here that live in Central America and the Caribbean, right? So you're pretty much saying, "OMG IDK WHO CARES" just because it's not in your backyard. Yes, I get that you live in Canada and it's basically too cold for the mosquitos to get up there, but for those bumpies in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California where Mexico has active cases, and all the southern states where it can easily spread, yes, this is important and we should know everything we can about this.
I'm just gonna jump on here and say this. I am following this thread for information, but I have to say that you guys are just being hateful. You don't have kick a girl while she's down just because you don't agree with her statements, especially when they're as innocent as calling out media and the way they CAN blow things out of proportions. If you don't agree with someone move on and post your information for those that do want your info. I'm just sayin'.

Florida is also providing testing to asymptomatic women who have traveled, according to reports about the Governor's speech (which I have not watched).
@randishane011804 if the poster hadn't simultaneously posted over on the gender vs sex thread telling us not to get our panties into a twist she might not have gotten such a snarky response.

Why must it be that we always have to "move on" but others can't? I don't get it. We are here to talk about our different opinions and just because you don't like the sound of it, we are mean? Also like @elenabrent said, there is more to the story here so please take the time to understand our side before you jump on us saying that we are "hateful".
@elenabrent that's actually already happened in Sydney, Australia. They've found the mosquitos that carry them inside the airport, when usually they only live in tiny pockets of far north Queensland. I live an hours flight from Sydney so hopefully I'm okish
ETA: They've started spraying the planes and treating the water to try and kill the mosquitos before they get out.

Then why didn't you take your own advice ? This is a walking hypocritical statement. How can you post when you disagree with someone and then tell others to move on ?!

I suggest we build a wall......
I know there were some people on here and the Caribbean travel thread who were frustrated at the lack of testing options. Will post there too.
