Acupuncture experience anyone? (Pregnancy mentioned)

Hi Ladies. After another unsuccessful month of TTC, one that was filled with BD'ing at all the right times, it looks like I am out this month as well. We have been TTC for 18 months, DH sperm counts were fantastic, and I had no issues that could be found by US, HSG of day 3 labs, but I am a type 2 diabetic, so insulin resistance is suspected and I am taking Metformin, currently in the third month of 1500mg 1x per day.

I had a friend recommend fertility acupuncture. She and I have a very similar story, and after over a year of TTC and 3 unsuccessful IUI's she fell pregnant on the 3rd month of acupuncture. I am willing to give anything a try right now, and acupuncture is much cheaper than IUI, which is not covered by our insurance and will be $3000 a round (yikes!). So I am wondering if any of you lovely ladies have tried fertility acupuncture, and if so if you will share your experiences with me. Thanks in advance.

Unexplained Infertility (suspected insulin resistance)

Re: Acupuncture experience anyone? (Pregnancy mentioned)

  • @heincm I love acupuncture. We had been trying for 14 months after my first pregnancy and loss, with no luck. I read a book called Making Babies that was co-written by an RE and an acupuncturist, and started following their recommendations for my fertility type in month 13. I started acupuncture in month 15. I had one acupuncture session a few days before O, and another session a week later. I got pregnant that cycle, 15 months after my first loss. I would recommend an acupuncturist who specializes in fertility, and someone who will give you a diagnosis from the Chinese medicine perspective, and will give you recommendations for what you can do at home as well. Food therapy is a huge part of Chinese medicine, so an acupuncturist who gives you lists of what to eat more of and what to avoid, in addition to the acupuncture treatments, is treating you more holistically than someone who only does the acupuncture. Good luck!

Also, there have been posts about acupuncture on this board and TTGP in the past few months - I recommend searching for more stories.

  • I am a big fan of acupuncture.  I did it with someone who specializes in fertility for 2 IUI cycles, and I wish I had started sooner (including for cycles before we started with interventions).  I also got recommendations for diet changes based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, and if nothing else, it was nice to regain some control over my life and habits when dealing with IF can make you feel so powerless.  My acupuncturist told me that 80% was the goal for diet changes, so I did not feel that it was making me overly obsessive.

I have no insurance coverage for acupuncture and pay $95/session in a fairly high COL area.  A less expensive option may be to look for community acupuncture, but I do not have experience with that and am unsure how specialized the treatments are.
