The Man Cold

The man cold. It's real, and it's unbelievable. My DH takes the man cold to a whole new level. When this man gets a runny nose he is down for the count.

He's been going to bed at 7(!) and sleeping in the spare room so DS won't wake him up for the last 3 nights. That's 11+ hours of sleep a night! He actually just can't do anything. He's too sick to cook, clean, eat, be in a reasonably good mood with others, play with DS, help with bath/bed time (because this occurs after 7:00). All things he normally does. He must either be sitting on the couch or in bed at all times or I guess he will perish? He starts taking cold medication cocktails the minutes he feels like he might get sick because he literally can't handle it. Haha.

Not really a vent because I bug him about this all the time (though I am jealous he has the freedom to do this). But I just can't believe this is real. My life can't just stop because I got a freaking cold! Anyone else have an SO who suffers from the "man cold"...or do you?? Come on, admit it ;)

Edited because my smiley face at the end didn't work....

Re: The Man Cold

  • Oh my DH is horrible!  I wish I could get that much sleep!  He took it to a new level this year and even found an article about how the man cold is a real thing and something about how our higher levels of estrogen or something makes us be able to get over it faster.... I looked him square in the face and said I'm going to kick you in the shin lol.

  • Well I'm not alone in this at least!

@ahoneycutt12 haha oh geez I hope my DH never stumbles across that. He doesn't need any more excuses to increase the ridiculous amount of sleep he's getting! Good luck to you the next time he gets sick!

@dmbfan46835 hahahah yes, it is so annoying for everyone else in the house. That would be super handy. I'd love to know approximately how long I'll have to be dealing with this...

  • ETA- Is there a grown ass man wonder weeks leap calendar??
    Hahaha.
  • The last time I got a cold I most definitely man colded it up. I acted just like hubby does when he gets sick. Stayed home from work (glad I had the vacation days to do it), refused to get off the couch, asked for tea and water constantly, went to bed as soon as I got home and slept in as late as I could. When he called me out for being a baby I reminded him that this is exactly how he is when he's sick, and if I have to take care of him then he has to take care of me equally. Not sure whether he got the message, but here's hoping the next time he's sick he's a little more adult about it.

  • Ugh seriously, man colds are the worst! My DH doesn't get sick often but oh man when he does, it's the end of the world. He completely over exaggerates and acts like he is dying. I cringe when he tells me he is starting to get a sore throat.
He also cries whenever we see something on tv (news or fiction) that involves a mother losing her son or vice versa. This has nothing to do with me or my kids, it's because he's a mamas boy and I tell him so. Don't get me wrong, it's good to be a little sensitive but he totally lacks empathy for anything else in life.
  • @BrandiLaw87 oh my DH is a HUGE mama's boy too. I wonder if there is a correlation between mama's boys and men who can't handle the common cold...
  • Adult wonder weeks app made me laugh so much!!!

My husband had the man cold during labor. That was...an experience...
  • The damn man cold is spreading. DH sent me a text earlier saying he had the chills. I get home with all 3 kids after school and the man is on the couch with the fireplace going...its 60* today. He keeps asking the rest of us if we're cold.

...if this turns into something...I will cry. It will mark the 700th time he's been sick since LO was born. He will require much sleep. Possibly many trips to the store for new drugs. And me up with LO. Because sleep regression. I do all the nights during the week since he works and he usually gives me some breaks on the weekends. Except when the man cold strikes. All bets are off when he's sick.
