Philosophical Remarks on Names as inspired by Robert Frost

First off, this is not a 'help me pick a name!' thread so much as a 'huh... naming is interesting' thread. So if that's not your cup of tea you won't find it very interesting I'm afraid.

Anyway, right now I'm reading a book discussing Robert Frost and his poem "The Road Not Taken," which also addresses his autobiography and references a lot of other individuals who corresponded with the poet at various times between 1874 and 1962. In reading this I was taken with the profusion of names that cropped up, especially ones that seem particularly unusual or old-fashioned from a modern perspective. We talk a lot here about how old-fashioned names are popular again, and I think that's true, but maybe only to a point. Also, the evidence seems to suggest that 'mis-spellings' or at least nonstandardized spellings of common names were not at all uncommon a hundred years ago, either. Which I found interesting!

I haven't added any of these names to my actual potential lists yet, but maybe I will. Feel free to discuss!

Re: Philosophical Remarks on Names as inspired by Robert Frost

  • There are a few old-fashioned boy's names that I love:

    Royal
    Sterling

I am surprised that the name Lyndon is not more popular right now. It fits the patterned of more feminized sounding boys names like Jayden and Kayden.

It doesn't surprise me that there was quite a variation in name spellings back then, since there was a lot of spelling variation in other words.
