Likes to suck on clementines

Is it ok to allow my 18 week old to suck on a clementine?
I was eating one and my baby girl was watching so I gave her half of a clementine wedge to lick. I was thinking she will make a sour face - but it back fired! She loved it and wanted more. I held on to it tight as she licked the wedge but then she started to suck on it and I know she ate some pulp. I took it away and you could see it in her eyes that she was disappointed but I don't want her getting a tummy ache.
Is it too early or is the a down side to letting my 4 month old have a little clementine wedge?

Re: Likes to suck on clementines

  • Ah mine too! He LOVES it. I bought this the other day from babies r us and I've been using that. He loves to suck all the juice out of it lol

  • @ItsmeR30 and he is fine? No tummy aches?

  • Ive given it to him maybe a handful of times, but he's been fine. Maybe try a little at a time and work your way up.
  • My only thought is she's going to love how sweet it is and not eat her veggies. :)
  • My first loves clementines but she didn't have any til later, maybe 9, 10 months.. I've read that citrus can cause really bad diaper rash or other rashes around the mouth. But it's not like she's eating the whole thing.
  • Our baby boy loooooves the taste of oranges, and like PP, I've also read that citrus/acidic fruit can cause some pretty serious diaper rash, but not in all babies. If you think she's ready, you could always give her a little then keep a close eye on her skin and her diapers. If she doesn't react in a negative way, she's probably fine to eat them.

My main concern is actually choking since our little man did the same as your little girl - he started out just licking a bit of juice off of his lips, but then he wanted the whole wedge, grabbed it, started sucking on it, and it started coming apart in his mouth! I had to pull it out before anything got lodged in his throat. He cried because he reeeeaaally wanted that orange, but for now, it's just too risky. Maybe try to mash it up a bit before giving it to her?
  • I had the same thing happen with a nectarine - she pulled my hands toward her mouth and started sucking on the fruit. I think she liked the texture, taste and that it was cold (it was refrigerated), which was good for her teething.

When I took it away she cried! I've done it a couple of times since with no reaction and she doesn't get the pulp or anything. My only concern is that she may develop a sweet preference so I'm thinking of holding off until she is more established on solids.
  • My little girl loves licking/sucking fruits and veggies. Iv been doing it since she was 9 weeks old and my pedi didn't have a problem with it. Though i would do one type at a time and I haven't done any citrus fruits
  • Our pediatrician said that although guidelines have changed quite a bit in recent years her recommendation is still to stay away from citrus until 12 months as it's too harsh on a developing digestive system.

This citrus fruits can be really tough for some LOs and cause acidic poops leading to horrible diaper burns. DS had a really bad food intolerance to strawberries, blueberries and citrus.  It was so awful my pedi sent us to the allergist.  We were told that its pretty common for babies under a year to struggle with those kind of fruits. I can't stress how bad it was, he screamed for days during changes and I basically just kept him naked 99% of the time and cleaned the floor up after.
  • My lo loves to suck on fruits, pineapple and pears mostly. I just hold it for her. I have given her small bits of soft foods that I'm eating, like banana or bread. We went out for coffee and I got a donut, so she opened her mouth for some and I gave her a piece of the soft middle, OMG she loved it and cried because I wouldn't give her more fast enough. I felt bad because I wouldn't give her more and she cried. Luckily she discovered a flag blowing and she stopped.
