Free Books

My best friend sent me this link about a program from Dolly Parton that you can sign your child up for at birth and they send you a free book each month.  I thought I would pass it along!

    Mine either :(@thismakes4 Just checked.

My area either. I even tried adding my dad's address to see if they could get the books and hold them for me but they aren't either. :(

Anyone know what area it does actually work in?

Idk which areas have it, but I found somewhere online where it says in order for it to be available your county/library district must participate in the program.

If you look on the website there's a 'Find my Affiliate' link which kinda gives you a general idea of the areas covered. Of course the county next to me has it and the county over from my dad has it (which really sucks bc he's literally almost in that county by like maybe a min), but no luck for us.

My county doesn't participate either! :( My mom's does though, so I will just register our baby boy under her address.

From what I understand, this program is growing all the time. So keep checking!

I'm pretty familiar with this program because where I'm at it's run through the local United Way.  I'm sure in some areas the library might be the program sponsor, but it varies from place to place.  Even though there is some support from the parent organization, each program area has to do their own fundraising to provide the books.  Where I live, United Way raises the funds to provide the books.  It is $25 per year to provide books for one child.

I hate to sound like a Debbie Downer, but I would personally only sign up for the program if I really needed assistance purchasing books.

We live in Tennessee where every new baby is eligible; my son loves getting his books "from Dolly".  While we certainly have many that we have purchased and still go to the library, he has received a lot of really good ones from the Imagination Library.

This is such an amazing program!  I worked for americorps in college, and when we handed out books to preschoolers, it was astonishing to me how it was the first book for many of them.  But I understand everyone situations are different, but it really puts alot of things into perspective. (Although one mother did say "Now he is going to expect me to read it to him every night!" You just gotta smile and walk away.)

My LO already has a growing library lol.

I would love to know what books are in dolly's library though!
