You know in Father of the Bride Part 2 when..

...George Banks says that Annie and her Mom, who are about to deliver, weigh in at 128 and 132 lbs respectively? THAT IS INSULTING. I mean, I thought that was ridiculous as a teenager, but now I'm offended and heartbroken. I weighed myself this morning-- 6 weeks pregnant and I gained a pound. I'm not skinny but I'm not fat-- I carry my weight pretty well-- 177 pounds, 5'5" and a size 12 dress, but like-- now I'm TERRIFIED to gain weight. I saw the breakdown of 30 lbs in pregnancy, but if I've already gained a pound this early-- this cannot be good. I've been in tears all morning.

Stupid Father of the Bride.

  • Ha! I totally didn't remember that those were their weights at 9 months pregnant!! That is crazy! I stepped on the scale for my 7 week ultrasound last week and I was already up 4 lbs...so...yeah. I'm sure it's just water weight but still! I gained 40 lbs with my son and it was very hard to get off. I am really hoping not to have a repeat of that but so far I'm not feeling too optimistic! My body just seems to gain weight easily while pregnant!

  • I would try not to stress about it and definitely don't compare yourself to others. You might only have added water weight right now because bloating is so common at this point and could be back down that pound in a few days.

  • I remember that, too! I love that movie, despite the unrealistic weights of the expecting.

I'm just happy being pregnant. If I puff, I puff. Our scale battery is dead right now, so I don't know what I've gained (surely something due to French fries being one of the few tolerable foods I can eat) but I know I've been feeling pretty puffy this week. Too bad --- I'm growing a human.
  • I wouldn't let father of the bride get to you. We are similar in size. I weighed 168 with my first at 5'5" and I went up to 216.. It was unpleasant and depressing, especially because I was eating very healthfully. But most of it did come off. It took a while, I'm 170 now.

You can't freak out about every pound. You just can't. Just focus on eating healthy and moving when you can, it's all that's within your control anyway.

  • Okay, first your one pound weight gain isn't really cause for concern. Many gain around 5+ for the first trimester alone. I actually gained a full four pounds yesterday. Like a 4 pound difference between morning and evening in one single day. Actually it may have been slightly more than that because I rounded from the decimal. It's called water retention and bloat and is sadly a side effect of being pregnant. I didn't weigh again this morning, but I'm pretty sure I was back to my "morning" weight again.

And I don't want to say those weights are ridiculous because some women may very well end up at 128 at the end of their pregnancy and still have healthy pregnancy weight gain, and I don't want to shame/embarrass those women either. But their pregnancy and weight gain have NO BEARING on yours. So please don't compare yourself! Your pregnancy weight gain is no one's business but yours (and your doc's!) and it doesn't really matter what you gain as long as you're healthy! Please don't stress about it!
  • Lol I'm watching that movie right now!
    Love the movie!
However it's a very unrealistic amount of lbs.
    I'm only 7w4days and I'm up 5lbs of bloat! ;)
  • I'm with @KimmySchmidt -- even when watching what I ate, I gained over 50 pounds with my first pregnancy. 35 of that came off in the first two weeks post-partum. It was water and baby, etc. the rest came off over time, though I'm sure it's already coming back! I don't have a working scale in the house and that works best for me, emotionally.

I think, ultimately, you just make the best choices you can and your body is going to do what it's going to do.
  • For their height, I'm not even sure that's a realistic non-pregnancy weight. That line was definitely written by a man. Lol.

I clocked in at 198lbs when I delivered LO (38 weeks). By my 6 week appointment, I was down to 161lbs.

ETA: cut short due to grabbing little hands. I'm afraid if gaining a lot of weight again, but it can come off; just don't expect miracles.
