2nd Trimester

Palpitations?

I've been getting some palpitations off and on for about a month now. At first they were like clockwork at the end of the day, when I finally sat down to relax in the evening. Now (I'm 14 weeks tomorrow), I will go days without a single one and then I'll have a bad day when they are non-stop all day long. Maybe just a change in hormones or a baby growth spurt? Anyone have palpitations during pregnancy and have something that helped other than resting?

I did have them with my first pregnancy as well.

Re: Palpitations?

  • while this is something I've seen a lot of women complain about on here, i would be speaking to your doctor about this.

I already have and they are benign. Just your average PVC's structurally speaking.
  • Excess blood flow from pregnancy in general can cause irregular heartbeat or palpitations. Palpitations can happen at any time during pregnancy but usually kick up more the further along you get. Sometimes you might note something triggered you to get palpitations like exercise or laying down after a big meal.

I have 2 heart conditions; one of which causes rapid palpitations (tachycardia) that sometimes take a while to stop- 2 min to 2 hours. Since I already have a documented medical condition, pregnant or not, I have triggers that cause palpitations to get worse but generally, I get palpitations and irregular beats on and off daily when pregnant. My triggers are stairs, heat and without a doubt caffeine. The smallest amount of chocolate can throw me into an episode.

If you have concerns or feel the palpitations are painful, cause pressure or cause interruption to your daily routine, ask your OB for a cardiology rec. They will prob send you for an EKG and echo... basically monitoring and an u/s of your heart and valves. It takes like 20+ min to complete both and they are painless :)
  • I have these too and found that rest and drinking lots of water helps.
  • I have them too. I was diagnosed with PVC's several years ago and pregnancy exacerbated them. I was sent to a cardiologist who performed an EKG and echocardiogram. I also wore a Holter monitor for 24 hours. Those three tests found that I have PVC's, tachycardia, two leaky valves, and that my ventricles don't relax as they should. None of it was reason for my cardiologist to be concerned. They didn't give me any advice on how to reduce them as in my case, the "cure" is birth.

  • Yup. I had these and went to the doctor. They did an EKG and some blood tests and everything came back normal. My heart feels like it's pumping so hard sometimes I can hear it in my ears -- super annoying. Rest and water have helped me -- also no sugar/caffeine the few hours before bed. I only really noticed mine when I was going to sleep or settling down for the night.

Definitely ask your doctor especially if they're happening more than once or twice a day. I get them randomly too- two or three times a week probably. As far as I've been told there's nothing to do about them, just know that they're normal and try to relax. Also drink water. But that's the catch-all answer. Did you drink 80oz of water today? No? Try that first... Meh maybe it would help.
  • I had them with my first pregnancy. After blood work and a EKG for an hour, everything came back fine.

HOWEVER, since it is your heart, I highly recommend going in and having it looked at regardless of what other are saying is "normal". Just because it was normal for some of us, doesn't mean that it is normal for you. In my last BMB, there was a mom that asked about it, and everyone said that it was normal and not to bother going in to at least have it checked. Turns out, her's wasn't normal, and after giving birth to her baby, she went into cardiac arrest the next morning and had to have open heart surgery. So I would at least bring it to your doctors attention, and see what he/she has to say. Better safe than sorry!

  • Thanks everyone. Trying to increase my water intake to see if that helps. I'll mention it to my OB tomorrow at my appointment.
