How often is your baby pooping??

My 10 week old literally poops once every 3-4 days!!! When he finally goes, it's very soft, not hard. The pediatrician keeps telling me this is normal, and he's not constipated because his poop is soft, but, this is not normal to me! This is my 3rd child and the first time this has ever happen. He gets really frustrated, cries and tries to push but nothing comes out. Is anyone else dealing with this??

Re: How often is your baby pooping??

  • Mine is every 2-3 days and he is EB, my first two (also EB) were every day and my 3rd who was formula fed was every 1-4 days. I've been told babies can go like a week as long as they are peeing it's ok.

Our pedi did have us with lo #3 give him 1oz prune juice 1oz water to get him regular.

  • My LO is 11weeks old, is EBF and only poops every 3 to 4 days...our pedi said it was totally normal for BF babies since they digest BF more efficiently
  • 8 weeks, EBF and has a blowout every 1-3 days. She pooped multiple times per day at first, and then started spacing it out around 5 weeks.
  • Almost 11 weeks,EBF and pooping twice a day. One of them is usually a blow out.
  • At 9 weeks she goes anywhere from once to 3 times a day.. EPING here

  • FF, once a day, occasionally twice.
  • With the exception of a very rare bottle of formula, DD is EBF and poops a MASSIVE poop every 2-3 days.
  • LO is FF, and he was going quite regularly (at least once a day, if not multiple times), but we've had issues lately. He went about three days with no BM, and when he finally went, he was crying and clearly in pain while passing the BM and it was hard. I called pedi's office, and they said I could give 1 oz of apple or pear juice per day. They told me there is no need to water it down. I have been giving the juice and he's been having a BM every 1-2 days and it is soft again, with no major signs of pain while passing. LO is 10 weeks.
  • EBF & he poops every 1-3 days. Frequent blow outs over here!
  • Mine poops 2-3 times daily and I still get blow outs :S
  • 8 weeks, EBF and has a blowout every 1-3 days. She pooped multiple times per day at first, and then started spacing it out around 5 weeks.
this. sounds exactly like our bebe
  • 4 times a day, I think. Definitely more than twice a day, but less often than before. Until around 7-8 weeks, she dirtied a diaper at every feed.

I wish my EBF DD only pooped a few times a week. That's a normal change that occurs around 8w, but no. 11w today and still pooping 5-6 times a day??!
  • My LO is younger than most in N15, only 7.5 weeks, but he poops a couple times a day. He's slowly been transitioning away from 5+ times a day and now he's down to two or three with a few "skid marks" throughout the day ;)

When he was born, the hospital pediatrician told us that as long as his poops aren't bloody or white like clay, and as long as he's not passing solid poops yet, just about anything is normal, including only going every few days. If you're concerned, keep in touch with your pediatrician; that's what you pay them for, after all.

During the day my ebf baby only leaves traces of poop in most diapers (maybe actually fills one). He usually chooses his middle of the night feedings to do all the pooping. Then I get to wake him up because he's usually also fallen back asleep while eating. :(

ETA he has now pooped through not one but 2 sleep sacks tonight. We just did all the laundry yesterday. It's like he senses it.
  • LO (10 weeks) used to poop about 5 to 6 times a day. Mid last week, he started pooping once or twice a day. They are massive. The last 2 days, he only pooped 1 HUGE poop and it was soft. He is BF and FF (2 bottles of formula a day and the rest are bm). Our pediatrician said if he didn't poop for 2 days to give him a call.
  • 8 weeks, FF he usually goes 2-3 times every other day. The longest he's gone without a BM is a day. His BMs are still soft. Pedi said call if he goes 3 days without a BM or if he looks like he's straining to poop but doesn't or seems in pain. But he said some babies bodies just regulate slower and they only poop every few days.
  • My LO used to go multiple times everyday. I am EPing. When we started Vit D drops at a month old she started pooping once every 3 to 4 days and seemed like her stomach always hurting and she had trouble eating. I stopped them on Saturday and Sunday she had 3 poops and ate just fine all day. I have a call into the Dr now to see if we can try the drops that are just one drop to see if those are better.
  • My son is 7.5 weeks and EBF and still poops at least 5 to 7 times a day. Pretty much every time he has a full feeding. Sometimes they are small but most of the time they are pretty massive.
  • We brought my daughter in to see her doctor after she went 7 days without a BM (she usually went 1x daily).  We already use BioGaia and do tummy massage, so she gave us some recommendations to try at home.  Two days later she finally went, and has gone every 3-4 days since.  Apparently up to 7 days can be normal for a baby who is EBF>

  • DS is EBF and poops every 1 to 5 days. DD at this age went every morning like clockwork.
  • I remember a woman on my Jan12 Bump page whose DD went more than a month! Her doctor wasn't concerned because she was EBF.
  • LO is EBF and poops after every feed.
  • DS1 went every 4-5 days (mostly BF) and he would be really cranky on day 4. I would massage his tummy each day (which seemed to help move things along) and he would have a huge blowout when the time came for a BM.
DS2 is 7w, EBF and poops almost constantly. It just leaks out all the time. Doc says both cases are normal for breastfed babies and there is no cause for concern if baby is otherwise well and gaining weight.
