DD is so sick, worried :(

My DD is six month old and sick.  She is refusing the breast right now and is taking bottled breastmilk.  She ate 5 times yesterday with a total of 16.5 ounces (no solids since this started last week).  She had 3 wet diapers.  I am so very worried about her.  We went to the doctor on 1/21 for a fever (102) and they sent us straight to the hospital.  We were in the peds unit for 8 hours, chest X-ray negative for pneumonia, urinalysis showed sufficient nutrition and hydration.  Fever dropped under 100 and she ate 3 times at hospital and they said, if she can eat she can go home.  They gave her Tylenol.  They said call on-call doctor if temp goes above 100.5.  We got home and one hour later temp was 101.6 on Tylenol.  Called on-call she said fever was not serious yet, she was ok, continue with Tylenol.  Went to scheduled follow-up appt 1/22, doctor said DD looked much better, another follow-up appt scheduled for 1/26.  Base of her fingernail fell off later that day.  Called on-call doctor and said to keep and eye on it until follow-up and that nails can be affected with a virus.  Fever was 102.5 yesterday and we tried some ibuprofen and fever finally came down under 100 for the first time since we returned from hospital.  She's been sleeping constantly, it's like having a newborn all over again.  Fever has been well controlled since yesterday afternoon but her last wet diaper was last night, she's eaten 2oz today and it is 9:00.  All she does is cough, cry and sleep.  The doctor said on Friday at office visit that 4-5 feedings should suffice right now but 5 small feedings yesterday was probably half her usual.  I know I can call on-call again today but I don't really have anything new to report, fever is better, she's had a wet diaper in the last 12 hours, and she hasn't stopped eating.  I would feel so much better right now if she just ate more, had wet diapers, and perked up a little bit (she sleeps soooo much).  Are there any BTDT moms that had a scary virus like this with their kids?  Advice?

  • Her eating less means that she isn't trying to gain weight or grow right now. She is just eating to maintain. By sleeping so much she can cut out extra calories being burned by being awake and doing things.

If her fever is coming down then she is getting better, it just might take several days for her to fight off the effects.

Unless something changes for the worst, she is on the mend and should be back to herself in a couple days.

  • I don't have any advice but I'm praying for you and your little one!
  • We were there at 2 months and it sucks so I feel for you momma. Just remember to keep offering and look for some wet diapers. You could try a warm bath too. Cuddle and do lots of skin to skin and keep an eye on her fever but it sounds like you are doing everything right. Kids are resilient and she should bounce back soon. I think it was 4 days of my DD being pathetic and sleepy and on and off fevers and 3 more days till she was back to herself. Good luck momma. Hope she feels better soon.
  • I hope your LO feels better soon.  It is so scary when they are this little and sick.  We are just getting ov my DD's first virus - her temp was 102.1 with Tylenol.  I have tried to remember all of the fevers my DS had, to include one of 105 once!!!!  My Dr always reminds me that a fever is actually good because it's the body's natural way of fighting off the virus.  Hang in there!
  • Fevers are definitely good (to a point) so the body can fight off the bug, just watch for spikes in temp is the only thing I would add. Febrile seizures are common in little ones with big spikes in temperature. So if she's still creeping up in the 100+ keep alternating with Tylenol and ibuprofen to keep it down and not to overload her on one med or the other.
  • I don't have any advice to offer either but hang in there! Hope your LO gets better soon!
