Dirty Diapers

Silly question that I'm too embarrassed to ask the pedetrician. Very often after our late nighttime feedings (our routine is diaper change, 30 minutes of feeding, 20 minutes of burping, 10 minutes of holding and she is in a sound sleep) as I'm putting her back in the bassinet, I hear her poop squirt. Do I change her again? If so its another hour long process of going back to sleep, if not, she's sleeping in her dirty diaper for an hour to three and a half hours before she gets up again. Usually it's 3am when this happens. She is swaddled so I can't check how much poop without waking her up.

I would change her. You don't want her sitting in that plus dealing with diaper rash is even more of a pain. I like using those gowns at night because it makes the changings a little easier. Don't worry the nighttime constant changings don't last forever!

I don't. If baby is sleeping and the dirty diaper doesn't bother them, I let them sleep and change first thing when they wake. It is not great to have the poop on their skin, but they will be up soon anyway!

I do but I also know what you mean...it definitely extends the sleep process! If he is tired, the process is significantly shorter, however.

I do. I don't want her to get a rash, shes only 5 days old and mommy has sensitive skin so she may as well. However, we have a similar routine. Except she doesn't really wake up fot a diaper change at that point. I've been blessed with a baby who loves sleep

I don't, and my son does this pretty much every time he feeds. After I change him I let him air dry a little bo then I use petroleum jelly on his bottom to prevent diaper rash while he is sleeping. The pediatrician said that's perfectly fine as long as we are taking measures to prevent diaper rash. He's a firm believer in don't wake the sleeping baby if they are sleeping for good stretches at night.

ETA: he is a 2.5 weeks old and no signs of diaper rash have appeared

Yes. Their skin is so sensitive. Pee is one thing but poop is another. That gets cleaned as soon as I know about it.

I can't stand a dirty baby.
If I know about it it gets changed immediately

I usually change it but one thing u can do it put petroleum jelly or A&d on at that diaper change so if baby poop's after and is asleep, butt is protected til next change

This is always my debate too. I go back and forth depending on the circumstances! I always put cream on and haven't had any issues and it doesn't seem to bother him. Often if I hear something and put him down, I worry until the next change and then see it was barely anything anyways! Trust your gut??

I change poop diapers right away. My little guy got a sore spot from a diaper that was on a little too long and it's hard to get rid of. But I dread that sound at 3am. Sure enough happens almost every time.

My kids have sensitive skin like me, so poopy diapers always got changed immediately or they'd get a rash. If yours doesn't, then don't worry about it.

I always change if it's poopy but will let a wet diaper go unless it's soaked.

If I know he's pooped before I put him down, then I will change him.  He is usually pretty tired after his bottle, so if he does do it he has no issues going to sleep afterwards.  If I get up in the middle of the night and check on him, or check on him while he's napping during the day and I smell that he's pooped, I don't wake him to change it.

If I know LO has pooped, he gets changed right away. Even if he had just fallen asleep. I'd rather not let him sleep in his dirty diaper for hours. Also I feel like he'll sleep better and longer anyways if he's comfortable and not sitting in poop.

Our routine is to change her, feed her, burp her, and usually change her again. It never fails that she poops damn near every time she eats... but, she also becomes so upset and inconsolable that if she falls asleep before that second diaper change, it will wait until she wakes up.

Life saver - Boudreaux's Rash Prevention Spray. I buy it at Target. I use it after every poopy diaper on my 13 month old (and now the baby). Worth it. Works like a charm!

I change it as soon as I notice a poopy diaper. I'm under the same mindset as a PP that she will probably sleep better anyways with a clean diaper

Breast fed or bottle fed? Breast milk poo you could probably leave without a problem, but formula poo I'd change. I've missed poos for a while with a breastmilk poo and there is never any stuck to the skin or causing any problems.

Thank you everyone for all the insight, very helpful. She actually did have a diaper rash (probably from me doing this). Pediatrician recommended triple cream which cleared it right up. Going to try changing her immediately if it happens tonight and seeing if I can change her without waking her. Wish me luck!
