IUGR getting induced at 37 weeks

I have single umbilical artery syndrome and baby is IUGR at the 1 percentile. I'm almost 32 weeks and she's under 3 lbs.
They are inducing me at 37 weeks as ling as she keeps passing her BPPs twice a week. They said as long as she's over 33 weeks, I can deliver at my local hospital but they only have a special care nursery not a NICU. Anyone have advice or experience please???

Re: IUGR getting induced at 37 weeks

  • My ds was iugr from 20 weeks started at the 9th percentile and dropped to the 2nd by 27 weeks. I ended up developing pre-e at 30 weeks and was induced at 31weeks he was definitely tiny 2lbs 10oz and had a 5 week nicu stay. We had hoped to make it to 34 weeks but neither of us were having that. I would recommend delivering somewhere with a nicu if you do deliver early they can work wonders. And the specialist where I delivered reasurred me that gestational age is more important than size as far as recovery so even if you had to deliver earlier 32 weekers do very well although scary and nicu time can seem to take forever its good to know they are in the right hands! If they decide to deliver early you will likely get steroid shots to develope babies lungs I had them and my son had 100 percent oxygen and breathed on his own from the start. Also on a better note a friend of mine had an iugr baby and had her ds at 37 weeks he was a little over 5 lbs so stay positive:) sometimes they are better out than in but I would say to just try not to worry to much it seems like they have a really good eye on you both!

  • I definitely agree with what @killysmum23 said. Gestational age is so much more important. My little guy came at 34 weeks at only 2 lbs 13 oz. He came out breathing all on his own and never needed any breathing support or meds. We just had to fatten him up!
  • If possible, I'd elect for a hospital with a NICU. You hope for the best, but want doctors, nurses and technology on hand ASAP if you need a NICU environment rather than a special care. My son (almost 3 now) was IUGR and I had HELLP syndrome. He was born at 33 weeks at 4.2 and quickly went to 3.10. He was only in the NICU for 4 days until he got moved to the special care nursery, but I felt better that they were prepared and handle much higher need babies than him. Good luck!
  • Thanks everybody for the replies and positive thoughts. I got the shots at 26 weeks due to scary gallbladder issues so we are good there. You guys are great.
  • We were IUGR and had to deliver at 34 weeks. My daughter was 4 pounds and had a two week NICU stay. I would deliver at NICU hospital if it were me. I'd want to be right there incase the baby would have to go in. Most other moms that I have talked to with IUGR also had NICU stays.
