2nd Trimester

Sharp Intense Pains in Ribs and Diaphragm

I am 20 weeks along, due to be 21 weeks this Sunday. I have a comprehensive ultrasound on Monday, but these pains started out of no where and I am worried that something isn't right. Earlier today, I felt a very sharp pop to my diaphragm and since then it hurts to stand up straight, my ribs hurt if I breathe too deep, and I still have pain in my diaphragm, but now it is also in my back directly behind it, and also now I have cramping right behind my belly button. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, can anyone provide any remedy? Is this something I should be alarmed about? If the pain does get any worse I will go to an ER, just wanted to see if anyone has had this problem. Please and thank you.

Re: Sharp Intense Pains in Ribs and Diaphragm

  • Well I'm not a doctor and not sure what's going on. My first thought was RLP or Round Ligament Pain but it usually doesn't last long and dissipates within a few seconds/minutes. Was the pop you felt after you got up or changed positions quickly? After you sneezed or coughed? But you mention it hurts to breath and your ribs hurt... Have you been sick lately? For some reason I started thinking pneumonia... Again, not a doctor. Do you have a nurses line for your OB or with your insurance? I'd call first before going and sitting in an ER for hours...

  • I would definitely call the doctor- talk to the nurse or staff on call and ask what to do in the short-term. Of course if it becomes unbearable rather than uncomfortable seek emergency care. Unfortunately a lot of the aches and pains that come and go, while they may seem intense for a moment, are normal and inexplicable. I have weird jabs of stabbing pain behind my belly button and a dull ache that comes and goes in my lower back this week. My best friend recently had her first and she started complaining of severe rib pain starting around 24 weeks. She is relatively short and was told the baby was just crowding things and that the rib pain was normal. She didn't wear a bra to work for the last 3 and a half months because the rib pain was too much. All this just to say, check with your doctor, but if it's normal just try to make yourself as comfortable as possible- we are all right there with ya. Good luck!
  • Couple things come to my mind - round ligament pain, Braxton hicks, and gas (yes, silly as that sounds sometimes gas pains can be up that high and make you feel like you're dying!)
  • Thank you everyone for your advice, I did call the doctor today, and they said that it sounds like round ligament pain, and gas. They told me if the pain gets severe or becomes completely unbearable to go to an ER. They also mentioned that with the stretching and movement of the baby, it's possible the baby put strain on my ribs and diaphragm, and that they will check it on Monday. So far the pain has gone down a good bit, and is at least tolerable for now. Thank you again everyone!
  • I had this with my last pregnancy. I went to my chiropractor - I had 5 ribs and my left shoulder out of place (I never would have guessed my shoulder, I had no shoulder pain) when he put everything back I INSTANTLY felt better
