3rd Trimester

Baby head/abdomen measuring big for 32 weeks

Hi!
So we just had a 32 week ultrasound and the tech stated our baby's head and abdomen are measurement closer to 35 weeks while her arms/legs are about 33. And she's close to 5 pounds already. Is there any one else with a baby that is measuring large or have had one in the past?

Does this mean I'm destined to have a large baby? I'm envisioning stretch marks, loose skin and a c section. I'm over reacting I know...our baby is healthy and I should just be thankful not vain.

Re: Baby head/abdomen measuring big for 32 weeks

  • Ha ha... my first was born at 35w4d.... during the ultrasound just 1 hr before he was born... his belly was a whopping 41 weeks... guess what? He just had a big belly.
It is what it is... this baby brother of his is following suit and it's actually comical to us :)
    No worries

  • Thank you so much for your quick reply...personal question, because your first was measuring larger did you find that you had more loose skin or stretch marks?
  • At my 30 week US baby was 4.6 measuring 33 weeks. I had a regular appointment yesterday at 32 weeks and my stomach is measuring 35. I have a follow up US next week to see if she is still tracking to be big. All of these measurements can be wrong, but that doesn't make it less indimidating. My doctor is talking about a c section because I am pretty small and they are concern about shoulder dislocation during birth.

As far as stretch marks go, it's genetic and has to do with how elastic your skin is. Mine is apparently not and I have been covered in stretch marks for the last 12ish weeks. The size of your baby probably won't have much to do with that.
  • Thank you so much for replying! And good luck with this pregnancy!!

This is the benefit to being an already chunky person before pregnancy! My baby is just reusing all of my old stretch marks! If it helps, stretch marks eventually fade. I've had them most of my life and you can't even see the older ones anymore unless you really look for them.

Edit: I've heard those post partum belly bands are great for helping firm up loose skin

Ultrasounds are notorious for being off. I wouldn't stress it.

My experience doesn't mean anything for you but I've given birth vaginally to 2 nine pound babies and have zero stretch marks and no loose skin. I took care of myself during pregnancy and after and went back to "normal" rather quickly. (Normal for my body). Even my vag went back to normal after pushing 2 huge babies out :)
