Sleeping On Side

LO is 2 months and has started sleeping on his side. I was scared to keep him swaddled so last night I unswaddled just his arms and he was up on and off ALL night. He always sleeps until he eats btwn 3-4am. He obviously still needs swaddled to sleep but I'm so scared he's going to roll over on his belly and not have his hands out.

Anyone going through this? Is there any sort of approved sleeping wedges to use to maybe keep him lying on his side to prevent him from rolling forward?

Re: Sleeping On Side

  • I'm not sure, but do to Charlotte's reflux, she has a crib wedge under her mattress-got it from babies r us. Pedi approved, but I don't think it's AAP approved; however, we have no choice. Also, she uses a sleep sack. She kicks her legs and throws her arms around too and then couldn't sleep once we transitioned her out of the rock n play(pedi recommended for GERD). We gave the sleep sack a try, and while she still kicks around, she's confined and sleeps well at 10 weeks(usually, not always around 6-9 hours).

Maybe try the sleep sack before a wedge or any thing of the sort? We use the ones that are fleece and have the arms (some are like a vest). Then we put her in a onesie and socks before putting it on. Hope this helps a little!

  • My LO did this for a few weeks when we first brought him home, I asked my pedi about it and he said that if he is doing it on his own then it's probably ok but if I wanted to I could roll up 2 receiving blankets and place them on his sides from the waist down to keep him from rolling...we never ended up doing it and now LO stays on his back...maybe call your pedi and see what he/she recommends?
  • We had to stop swaddling LO because he kept loosening the swaddle blankets and pulling them over his face. We switched to sleep sacks. The first week was challenging, he woke a lot when we put him in his PnP. After about a week he got used to it and now we have no issues. He also rolls to his slide in sleep sometimes too.
  • For those who have tried the sleep sacks, do they ever go over their mouth? I've tried some on her but the neck seems like it would rise up if they like to scoot around crib

He stays in the swaddle, my fear is him getting onto his side and then rolling to his tummy and not having hands free. Today he rolled from tummy to back, so I have a feeling we are going to have to break the swaddle soon. I swaddled him tonight so I'll see if he rolls to his side at all. I'll call the pedi line tomorrow and see what they have to say. I'm pretty sure they think I'm crazy for the questions I call and ask!

I had him in a sleep sack last night and he was up every 20 min. Assuming because his hands still flail around.

I think people that DON'T ask questions are the crazy ones.

Maybe you can leave one arm out?

OMG! I've brought this up to my sister(nephew is 4 months), my husband, and then my pediatrician! I was worried about that too! We've used them every night for the past 2.5 weeks and the answer is no. And some are nicer than others where they lay more flat and fit a little better(but my daughters head is in the 86%tile, so there's that!) Neither my sister nor myself has had that issue, and we both started using them at about 8 weeks! Oh, and I'm pretty sure my pediatrician wanted to laugh at me, but settled for a polite giggle!
  • My daughter now 12 weeks has been a side sleeper literally from day one she would wiggle her self onto her shoulder to sleep. She still sleeps swaddled in a swaddle me wrap and we haven't had an issue. She's rolling from tummy to back and has been six weeks. She hasn't mastered back to tummy yet but we're close. I don't worry too much about her flipping over mostly because she ends up scooting herself to the side of the bassinet and sleeping there. I second pp suggestion of rolling up a couple of bump cloths to use to prop her on her sifd.

My LO has been rolling on her side in the swaddle since about 3 weeks. I've been tucking rolled up receiving blankets on both sides of her to prevent her from rolling over in her sleep.
  • Lurker from d15 board, my LO has been sleeping on her side since birth. The nurse put her that way in the hospital and I think she got used to it and would always roll to her side. We ended up dropping the swaddle cause she too was always breaking free and we used sleep sacks
  • We use a sleep sack swaddle. It has two ways hands out if hands in. She wouldn't sleep with hands out

  • We had a scare the one night we used a sleep sack. My mom was staying with us and she thought our LO wasn't breathing. He was but she totally freaked me out about the sleep sack. So I looked it up on Amazon and read the reviews. Not sure I will ever use one again. One couple lost their LO bc he was in it and rolled over and smothered to death. If your LO can roll or is near rolling over do not do arms in. Also another couple said it had gotten over their lo's mouth and if the husband hadn't seen it on the monitor it may not have ended well. I'm sure they are fine most of the time but these instances have scared me away from them.

Of course you're not supposed to swaddle when your baby starts to show signs of beginning to roll over, using a sleep sack or blanket. You should stop swaddling when their startle reflex goes away, which should be well before rolling over. If used properly, sleep sacks are completely safe. The halo sleep sack doesn't get anywhere near DD's mouth/nose if you put it on properly.

This. If it's going over baby's mouth, it's either too big/loose, or not put on correctly. I angle the flaps a bit downward instead of straight across when I wrap her arms in, which keeps her face free of fabric.
  • We have been using the Baby Merlin Magic sleep suit. Our LO isn't rolling yet but didn't love being swaddled and we came across this. I think technically it's a swaddle transition option. It's been getting us almost 4 hour stints at night at 9 weeks so we'll keep using it for now.
