Upper back pain

I know we've discussed lower back pain a lot. But I've been having extreme pain between my shoulder blades all night. I can't find a comfortable position, I've tried stretches and heat and Tylenol and nothing seems to touch it. Anyone else have experience with? I do have a doctors appointment in the morning

Re: Upper back pain

  • I don't have experience during pregnancy but I have had success at the chiro in the past, and I do remember mine asking me recently if I was having any this pregnancy. She said that its common, due to compensating for the change in center of gravity, especially if you tend to need to sit at a desk quite a bit. Best of luck!

  • I read a while back that because of the shifting of your organs, intestines, etc., that a lot of pregnant women experience upper back pain (between the shoulder blades), which is actually pressure from gas. Weird, I know, but that may be why Tylenol isn't helping.
  • Could also be gall bladder issues. That's the pain my sister described and she ended up getting her gall bladder out while pregnant
  • I have it most days. I assumed it was from the weight of my boobs (I've had it before and I am large chested normally. The pain just wasn't as often). I use a heating pad when it's really bad and visit the chiro every week and a half. Unfortunately I haven't found a fix for it, just ways to manage the pain so it's bearable
  • Thanks. It did eventually go down to a dull ache so I could sleep a little. I do see a Chiro every Monday but I may see if I can get in in the morning
  • I get that pain when I wear a certain bra then take it off.... I think from the tightness it pinches a nerve between my shoulder blades. Also I've experienced it when i wear no bra.... Maybe that could be it? Ill soak in the tub with a towel behind my neck or have hubby rub it till its manageable
  • I had this pain between my shoulder blades to the point where I couldn't stand up straight, started seeing a chiropractor and it was AMAZING! After about 4 visits I felt like a new person!!
  • Yes! Everyday since about 22 weeks (now at 38 weeks). It's like the movie Groundhog Day...it goes away during the night, I'm fine in the am and some time between 1-7 it flares up and only on my left side. Prenatal massages helped for a day and started to get expensive. Heating pad, hot showers, wear a bra as little as possible and definitely not one with an underwire and have your SO massage it as much as possible. Sleep with a pillow behind your back to help prop you up and if possible sit with a pillow behind you when at work, watching tv, etc. Like other people said, it's most likely because everything is squished together and pressed all up in you. It also gets a little better after the baby drops.
  • The pectoral area may also need some releasing with massage...if you think about how we tend to hold ourselves in pregnancy and where weight gets prodominately distributed (belly and boobs!) The pecs take quite a bit of that pressure...while the muscles in the upper back will stretch (between shoulder blades) and the pain often felt is from the stretching of those muscles which really need to be strengthened. Pectoral stretches can actually make a great amount of difference to pain felt in the upper back if done regularly :) they are nice and easy to do as well!

You described what I go through exactly. Mid-to-upper left side pain, goes away after I sleep, comes back early afternoon to evening, usually depending on how long I've been sitting in a desk chair. Good suggestions, especially about SO massages!
