CDC travel alert disrupting anyone's babymoon plans?

So my husband and I were planning a babymoon for Presidents day since i get some days off without touching my vacation which awesome! Lawd knows i need to save all my vacation for maternity leave. We love the warm weather and were deciding between Jamaica, Cancun and Cartagena. However, CDC just announced an advisory for pregnant women travelling to Caribbean and Latin america due to the zika virus. ( https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2016/s0315-zika-virus-travel.html) So I am struggling with where to go for some R&R.. any suggestions? I wont mind a resort in a cold place that could guarantee me daily massages or something....... wondering if any ladies have ideas, suggestions or are in the same boat.

Re: CDC travel alert disrupting anyone's babymoon plans?

  • We are on the same boat. I wasn't planning on going to any of the countries but I think I am planning on doing the scenic drives in California. Another option is to rent a nice cabin with some lakeside view

  • Nice! Any suggestion on lakeside views? I love great views with nature so this sounds like a great option. I am in MD and my in laws live in CA, so they may feel a certain way if we dont say hi.... sigh would love the solo time to just dh and me. Thanks Chanfa!

  • @CarnDafoRose55 That I am still working on trying to find out. Lake Tahoe? Or maybe somewhere upstate NY?
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • Hmm... upstate NY is gorg! I drove from CT to Cooperstown NY in summer of 2014.. it was breathtaking if you love windy roads with lots of trees and scenic views. P.S how do you have the signature with your baby's size show? Mine still shows mc and ttc.. can't figure out how to change that!
  • what about Hawaii?
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • We were planning to go to Mexico in March. Now looking at San Diego.
  • So they found 1 or two cases of Zika in Hawaii and are now concerned that Hawaii is vulnerable because of international travelers and two species of mosquitoes found in the state can transmit the virus. Technically, Hawaii should be ok because the ladies that were diagnosed with zika brought it from abroad..... but dh is now weary of Hawaii  because of the reports. I think my best options will be to find something in the US. I was looking at Arizona spa resorts but most of them have steam rooms and hot tubs which i love but obviously cant indulge in right now. https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/31007233/hawaii-health-officials-worried-about-potential-threat-from-zika-virus
  • There are also cases in Texas, Illinois, & Florida. The virus is only transmitted through the mosquito and also possibly by sex with an infected person so just because someone has it in Hawaii doesn't mean anything until they confirm that infected mosquitos are in the area.

Fyi Tahoe is getting dumped on right now, so whether you plan on flying into Reno/Tahoe international or one of the Cali airports you will need all wheel drive, chains, or still hit road closure. Also, the resorts up there right now are flooded with skiers/snowboarders, so keep crowds in mind.

Eta: By right now I mean 'from now until whenever the El Nino system lets up'.
  • look up Rockport Massachusetts, we used to go there when I was little and it's an adorable fishing village. The Proposal was actually filmed there and Gloucester is a few towns over, where the Perfect Storm took place and was also filmed. Lots of cute little shops, bed and breakfasts, art galleries and delicious food!

Also, Lake Tahoe is amazing. We went there for Christmas and I was blown away at how beautiful it was. We rented a cabin that overlooked the lake and mountains and I'd go back in a heart beat.

  • True.... but sheesh it just makes me nervous.. sigh! I guess this is the worrywart mother in me coming out ha!

We're doing a weekend trip to the Indian hot springs. They have a hot spring pool with temp at 90-100 degrees suitable for small children and pregnant women as well as private baths where you set the temp. Their cave springs and jacuzzi's I can only dip feet in, but I think it'll still be a neat experience! Nice restaurants, prenatal massage, and hanging in some springs- R&R for sure :) I totally recommend springs and spas (you'd be surprised what you can find on groupon) for long weekend trips. Almost always cheaper than a beach trip and just as relaxing.

PS- few or no mosquitos in Colorado/ New Mexico (my other favorite hot springs spot)
  • @noelietrex I like! I like! I just assumed hot springs were out of the question for preggo ladies. I've only been to one hot springs and it was in costa rica. It was great and will love to do it again! Starting my search on hot springs in the US :) BIG thanks :)
  • @PinkLady2015 Tahoe is getting a lot of mention here.. hmmm but @nerdchild comments make me pause... but looking into it! Thanks for the feedback :)

Hi, I can't read and didn't see the Presidents Day weekend... what about Vegas? It'll still be chilly here so no outside pools, but the spas at the casinos are freaking fabulous and you could catch some shows and eat at tons of yummy restaurants.

I'm from upstate NY and it's cold as fuck there right now... and usually gets dumped on around this time of year... I'd recommend upstate NY in October when the leaves change, but otherwise, not so much.

What about the outer banks in North Carolina?

Edited to add: What about Arizona-- https://www.arizonabiltmore.com/ or Sedona?

  • Tahoe is absolutely gorgeous. I'm from the Reno area originally and make regular trips over the pass going north of Tahoe. The road crews are pretty good about keeping the roads plowed, but if you are unlucky enough to make the drive when it is dumping snow or when someone crashes their car you are either delayed or turned back. If you get a private cabin you avoid the winter sports folks as well.
  • On man, we're headed to Hawaii in 3 weeks! Should we cancel?!
  • @iamautumn I don't think you should cancel. Its not on the high alert list since its part of the US. The article i posted on Hawaii says the lady that had it came from Brazil and you can only get it through mosquitoes... so its like @melanncal said until they confirm the mosquitoes have it, you are in the clear. I am just paranoid at this point because I haven't booked anything. If i already booked, i would say a prayer and go enjoy my vacay. Just stay in well lit areas and away from stagnant waters ( if they have that in Hawaii) that look like they can harbor mosquitoes. This is my common sense thinking not fact! Get Off spray too if that's safe for pregnant ladies. Have fun!
  • @CarnDafoRose55 thanks for the reassurance! That's kind of how most of my pregnancy has been rolling so far, praying for the best so I don't lose my mind worrying! Aloha!
  • We were planning on USVI but have since changed our mind. We're thinking about Hawaii but we were just there last March for our honeymoon. I'm not in love with how long it takes to get there from where we are either.
  • @PinkLady2015 I think I am narrowing it down to a resort in AZ or CA. We were in vegas in July.. so not so excited to go back so soon. We were also in Miami in May and were in Tampa 2 weeks to move my lil bro into college.. hence why i haven't mentioned Florida. This looks so nice: https://www.postranchinn.com/accommodations/mountain/

I've been told that bug spray is safe. I found the mosquito bracelets very helpful when we lived in Indonesia where viruses transmitted through mosquitos is very high.

  • @Racso12 ... the flight time to Hawaii is an issue for me too. I am working with 5 days so i don't want to feel worn out from such a long flight. Thailand was my first choice but that's far. USVI is nice. I visited St. Thomas and St. John in 2007. Gorg beaches... you can watch sea turtles at Trunk Bay and awesome snorkeling at coki beach. Def a place to visit in the future.. assuming you haven't been there before.
  • @melanncal Good to know!  Never heard of mosquito bracelets!
  • I am in love with Kohler, WI, but for longer trips it ends up being pricier than many tropical vacations. The carriage house hotel is attached to the spa. There is also a cheaper associated hotel that is nice called the Inn at Woodlake but one must purchase spa services to use the spa. It's a great place to read and relax. Perfect for those who want a drivable place in the Midwest. Google destination Kohler.
  • @noelietrex having grown up in Idaho springs, be careful going to the Indian springs. There are a lot of major drug addicts who frequent the hotel and pool areas, as well as the deaths that have happened in the caves and private baths. The town is beautiful though, and a short drive to silverthorne which is super beautiful this time of year.
  • The travel alert completely changed our babymoon plans. We had planned a trip to Panama but put off booking until I saw my OB early last week. Just so happens, the travel alerts started coming out around that time and I was so grateful we had waited to book. Now we're booked to go to London and I feel completely comfortable with that. My OB said we should be OK going anywhere in the US, Canada and Europe as long as there was access to good medical facilities.

    Married 10.10.10
    DD born 7.25.16 <3
  • After talking with my doctor today, we changed our travel plans to Mexico (was in love with the short flight) for Hawaii. I'll be able to survive the longer flight knowing Hawaiian beaches await and a greatly decreased risk of Zika. Safe travels to all!

Arizona or California would be my top mainland choices - both have such beautiful & differing areas!

If you're in MD, what about a nice resort in Virginia or North Carolina? Like in the mountains? the omni grove park is amazing (and known for their gigantic spa) and the Highlands is super-romantic. Very Main Street/old town feel. Not much to do in terms of attractions but you can hike/walk around, and they have phenomenal restaurants. Blowing rock is another great town.

Edit- old Edwards inn is the resort in the highlands... It's awesome!!
