Pregnant after 35

Drinking and lying

Let the fake drinking and lying begin! I have a training this Thursday night which includes drinks and dinner, then a retirement party to go to Friday night where I know people will be drinking heavily. In addition, some friends want to do an overnight at a casino (either sands in PA or Atlantic city), and I've told them I might be going to Montreal that weekend with my husband (lie). Will have to be slick at this week's events- both are with work people and I'm not ready for them to know yet!

Re: Drinking and lying

  • As a (former, I guess!) wine lover, I thought hiding my pregnancy would be impossible! And I did have a waitress at my favorite local place ask if I was pregnant when I ordered a club soda :-/. But the good news is that the bigger the get together the easier it is to hide. People won't notice as much if you skip the wine or if you just never take a sip (or just have one sip for the toast, it won't hurt).Or if seated, put the wine on your husband's side and he can sneak some sips for you. Or you could always use the "I'm on antibiotics" trick. Good luck!
  • I did a lot of fake drinking my first trimester. I generally would get a half-glass of wine or a bottle of beer and just carry it around with me all evening like a prop, or just sit it in front of my plate at dinner. I always let someone pour me a drink if it was offered. I never took more than 1-2 sips. Sometimes I'd have my husband finish it for me. No one even took a second glance.

  • I just always told people I was taking meds for a sinus headache and it didn't interact well with alcohol.  I also really like drinking tonic and bitters or tonic and lime so people just assumed I had a mixed drink.
  • I second fizzy water with lime in it! In a short glass so you don't look like a lush ;)

I also let my wine be poured for me and would touch it to my lips early on, but my husband knew to do the real drinking. No one paid attention to it so you'll be ok.
  • Funny story, when I found out I was pregnant I was in Europe visiting DH's family. They knew we had just had IVF and that I could be pregnant, but kept offering me alcohol and telling me how a glass of wine a day during pregnancy was totally fine. It was an interesting experience having people push alcohol on me even though they knew I could be pregnant, very different than in America for sure!
  • At @mthoomom my husband is from Ireland and he has told me more than once that a drink isn't going to hurt me. He also said having some Guinness is recommended because it has iron. I'm not much of a drinker to begin with, so abstaining is just fine with me.

  • P.S. @tiffanyhrEvery time I see the post title "Drinking and lying" I think you're drinking like a sailor and lying about it. Lol

I keep thinking the exact same thing!

I have probably consumed the equivilant of a half a glass of wine over my pregnancy. I had a little sip of beer, tried a sip of an 18 year old scotch and had a mouthful of wine on NYE. Each time it tasted pretty gross to me and I generally am not a big drinker so it's not been too difficult to give up.

Coffee is a little more challenging. Before I got PG i would make a double-shot latte with fat free milk to which I would add coconut oil and a dash of vanilla. (Yes, i know coconut oil is a fat: DH only drinks fat free).

Full disclosure: the hardest thing for me to give up is weed. I've been a pretty regular user for years but have gone mostly cold turkey. Whenever I smell it it's like my little radar thing pops up and I get kind of excited. The thing is, i feel pretty good not vaping (dry herb, no liquid mixes like e-cigs) the way I was. Sometimes after I've been stressed at work I will find the stash and just stick my nose in and inhale. That does the trick!

I know there a lot of people who have strong feelings about cannabis so I do not share this information lightly. Glad DH and I can hold off on that trip to Colorado until after LO comes along!
  • This time of year you have a great reason not to drink... I would say it was a New Years resolution to get healthier and skip drinks for a month or two. I know I used a similar 'healthy living' excuse when I found out in September.
  • @lillebowski23 I had half a glass of champagne on Christmas eve. I am a whore for champagne. That was plenty for me though! I stopped drinking coffee for about a month before trying to get pregnant, with the intention of resuming my habit after the baby was born. But.... I started drinking the world's most watered down coffee about a month ago because I read that babies who aren't exposed to caffeine in the womb react more poorly to caffeine in breastmilk after birth. Also, good for you for holding off the marijuana while pregnant.
  • My baby loves my ritual single morning cup of coffee. That's when I feel all the best kicks!

  • @mthoomom - I also gave up coffee a month before getting pregnant. For a long time I resisted quitting because I figured if I wasn't drinking it when I got pregnant I would have to abstain during pregnancy as well. This morning I was just wondering about resuming while nursing.  I guess it may be a long time for me.

I haven't experienced lying about drinking yet, but I did lie today to my mom and my best friend from back home They both asked how the infertility stuff was going and I was like...."nothing new to report".

  • @BernieRae I gave it up because I was having IVF and I didn't want to take any chances that caffeine would affect implantation. There is no way I could not drink coffee after baby arrives, so I decided to resume drinking it in the third trimester. I didn't drink coffee when I had my other two children, so I don't know if and how it might affect breastfeeding. Hopefully everything will go smoothly and he won't mind.
  • I had no caffeine for a month of so before getting pregnant with my LO and abstained (except one or twice when I forgot when ordering Starbucks) during the whole pregnancy. I took it back up for a while after he was born and he seemed to do fine with it, even though we were nursing. I ended up giving it up again just because I seem to do better without it. And then we started TTC when he was about 9 months old. We'll see what I do this time--but I like the idea of maybe reintroducing in the third tri. At least a little bit. It'll be the dead of summer and crazy hot here, so the appeal may be a bit lower anyway. Hm.
  • For me coffee has been a huge aversion in all three of my pregnancies. I normally love coffee, just last week DH joked he was surprised Starbucks hasn't called to see if I am OK. Can't even stand the smell of it right now. I did start again in the third trimester @mthoomom with my daughter, so that is interesting about caffeine and breast feeding. I tried with my other two kids to abstain while breast feeding but after a few weeks with my son I thought he is such a good sleeper what can it hurt to have a cup in the am. With my daughter she was such a horrible sleeper I thought #$ck this I need a coffee and added one a day back in :).
