blizzard + full moon = labor?

I read that low pressures systems can cause labor and of course the old wives tales says that a full moon can, too. They're both coming this Saturday (if forecasts are correct) and I'll be nearly 39 weeks...  I'm interested to see if anything happens. Physically I feel great so I'm in no rush, but we're so ready (all baby contraptions assembled, 30+ meals in freezer, I've reorganized every closet...) so I wouldn't mind if he comes a little early :)

Re: blizzard + full moon = labor?

  • All my coworkers were saying the same thing today! Good thing, if needed, we can walk to the hospital from our house since the DC area will likely be in chaos of the snow really hits like they're saying
  • Loading the player...
  • I heard about that too! Also, on the 28th the planets will be aligned...it's kinda cool to think about. Can you imagine if everyone just went into labor at the same time?
  • Interesting to know. My mom had my sister the day after an earthquake, she said there were woman in the hallway in labor because it sent so many women into labor.
  • My midwife said the same thing today about the low pressure system! My sister is freaking out over the full moon. I'm a little nervous with the storm coming but is it balls s maybe if will help me labor home longer while my fiancé digs out the car. :-)

I live in the DC region , too! My coworkers also told me today about this concept. I'll be 38 weeks on Sunday, so I'm pretty sure my kiddo will hang in there. I hope so, because DC is crazy in a few inches of snow, let alone a foot or more!!

  • I'm 38w on Sunday so assuming the little guy hangs in there, but would have no problem with him making his appearance a little early!!

That's helpful! We're about 25 mins drive from hospital, but mostly highway and we have an suv for 4 wheel drive... should we need it. :)
  • I'll be 38 weeks tomorrow. I live around the Philadelphia region. Hopefully this snow fall is just a hype and does not happen. I am still trying to work up until I am due. I don't need more setbacks with icy sidewalks that I could fall on do to melting snow.. .
  • I'll be 38w on Friday, just in time for this DC blizzard and full moon. Poor DH is going to have to be on top of the snow shoveling just in case, but we do live less than 10 min from the hospital, thank goodness. My neighbor hit 38 weeks yesterday and said that she wanted the baby to arrive before the blizzard, in time to be home with the baby... She delivered this morning!! I want my baby to hold out a little longer!
  • I'll be 38 weeks Monday in NJ so we shall see
  • @baya5 - totally agree! Grew up in Buffalo and moved to the ski country out west for a few years before moving to the DC area last year. What terrifies me about these kinds of storms here are the other people that lose their s#it the second a flake sticks

  • @mommaz1 and @baya5 I agree to a point and I live inside the DC beltway. That said, the main problem in this region is that it is one giant city with the worst traffic in the US. This is not a rural area with spread out residences. The city and immediate surrounding areas have narrow streets in which in a lot of neighborhoods the only parking for residents is street parking. Plows have a hard time getting through the areas; when we shovel snow, where are we supposed to put it? We also don't get snow often, so we don't have a lot of plows (based on the number of streets/residences, etc). I agree, we are somewhat wussy (schools here had a 2 hour delay the other day for cold temperatures of 10 degrees). But the dense population and road systems are what causes the chaos here (and the dumb dumbs that drive their stupid rear wheel drive BMWs in the snow).
  • I'm in upstate NY and its been winter wonderland here for the past 2 weeks, we're used to the (lake effect) snow up this way but we still recieved a lot more snow in a short time then what we normally get. It sounds like this new storm coming is just going to miss us which I'm happy about but feel bad for the people that are going to get burried that may not be used to it or are in areas that dont have the proper equipment to dig out from it. Good luck to anyone in these areas and fingers crossed babies decide to stay put until roads are safe!
  • @SgtLou2 - I'm inside the beltway as well - right by Walter Reed. Our neighborhood is tiny and often forgotten by the plows so I fully expect not getting to work Monday if it hits like the latest CWG prediction.
  • @mommaz1 I will be getting out of my neighborhood somehow by Sunday morning to get downtown for the hockey game. It seems to be tradition to dig ourselves out from a lot of snow to go see the Capitals vs Pittsburgh Penguins. I think that this will be at least the 3rd time in 10 years to dig ourselves out just to attend this game :)
  • @baya5 except in the northeast  I live in norther VT, we've had a super mild winter this year, but between living here and in NH where I grew up I am no stranger to actual big storms . . . I found it crazy when I was in Las Vegas once as a kid (family out there) and people were freaking out about the "snow", which really was flurries that melted the second they hit the ground! Smh lol
  • My dad was born on today's date in Blizzard of '61 in DC. It would be pretty cool if his grandchild were born this week in the Blizzard of '16 but I'm only 35 weeks. I would really appreciate it if the low pressure would pop this kid out though even though we aren't totally prepared.

I'm sorry but every year the east coast makes me laugh when there's a chance of snow they freak out. We've been in an almost constant winter weather advisory for 2 weeks now and the lake effect snow is so continuous its like a winter wonderland. Although I do think it would be a fun story to say you gave birth in a blizzard. Sorry but I can't resist
I live in the Northeast...no one freaks out about snow.  We get a lot of it!

ETA: I feel bad for parts of the country who don't get snow often, as they don't have the cars, plows, salt, etc to safely operate business as usual.

  • The problem is that the southeast gets more wintry mix/ice. If all we got was snow that would be wonderful but when trees are falling on houses and power outages last days to weeks that's when it gets a bit more uncomfortable than just another day sledding and skiing. I don't know how people don't understand that... Add in the fact that there's almost no gear to prepare for or clear the storms and it's a pure mess.
  • I've had a couple coworkers say something about that too. My last day before my leave is Friday so I wouldn't mind her coming Saturday. I will be 38+1.

  • Northeast doesn't freak out about snow. I spent many years in upstate ny and blizzards and snow storms are a normal part of the winter. On the other hand, southeast loses their freaking minds when one single snowflake drops. I now live in central Virginia and people freak out at the site of little snow. The grocery stores get emptied out and everything shuts down. It's really annoying.

  • The reason that people go buy out the grocery stores is because the roads are a mess and people don't know how to drive in the weather around here. Here is DC, right now with very little snow (no road treatment was done in the area and no plows were ready for this dusting):
  • We get snow in New Mexico. Just had a bunch for Christmas unlike the east coast. Chillin in 70 degree weather and what not.
  • I live in Boston and I am pretty sure that after last year we will never be freaking out about a foot of snow again, seeing as the last of the snow didn't even melt until this past June. BUT I do agree that there is reason to freak out when you live in a city that has nowhere to put the snow and it cripples your public transit system. I am quite confused by the chaos the inch of snow in DC has already caused though. It's an inch of snow - maybe I'm missing something.
I, for one, am hoping we get a big storm - at least one this year. It hasn't felt like winter without it. If it's going to be cold then I'd prefer it at least snow a little. A foot sounds nice, and just enough to enjoy it before getting annoyed by it.
Good luck this weekend DC'ers. Stay safe!

  • Everyone has said that to me too. DH is going out of town to go snowboarding with my dad and brothers. I am in DC. I have his family around in case anything happens. He is like all nervous now, if there was no full moon or just a snow storm he wouldn't care but now that it's both he is like omg, what's going to happen if ____ and ____? I'm like calm yourself. I haven't had any signs of labor so hopefully not this weekend. I want her to cook just a tad longer lol

  • @hbg8711 the chaos last night was because the storm hit right at rush hour, dropped the inch fast, and the roads weren't treated so it stuck making the the roads very slippery. It doesn't take much for normally bad traffic to turn into 400 accidents (seriously, that is what I read from one source this morning). Just bad timing of the storm.
  • @baya5 @Monkeybutt80 As someone from Georgia, I don't worry about the snow or ice, I worry about the millions of Atlantans who DO worry about it and go batshit crazy. Two years ago, the highway that I would need to take to get to the hospital was literally shutdown. People had babies in their cars, and many others slept in their cars overnight. The south is ill-prepared for these things. It's not the snow, it's the ice. We don't really get snow, but it'll rain and go below freezing and the roads will be a thick sheet of ice. And no one knows how to deal with it!

  • I live near DC as well...I'm a teacher, and we didn't have school today due to the shock of the snow. My district already cancelled for tomorrow as well. It wouldn't be so bad, but work has kept me occupied! Now I'm going to be home thinking about if my baby will want to show up during the blizzard. I slept most of today, so that leaves me some nesting things for the weekend. I'm at my doctor for my weekly appointment, so hopefully I get some reassurance that baby will stay put for a but longer, lol! Stay safe, everyone!!
