3rd Trimester

Baby boy name

I think my husband and I have decided on Spencer if we have a boy (we don't know what we are having). He really likes the sound of Spencer Reid. Which (before everyone says it) I know is from criminal minds as its a show we both love. Just not sure I can get over the fact it's after a tv character. Although I do love the character and he's a sweetheart.
Ive looked at every name and I just can't pick. So do I just go with what the hubby likes?!?

Re: Baby boy name

  • I've never watched that show but I really like the name.
  • It's a nice name but the tv reference is too strong, particularly since you've said you're both fans of the show. That really makes it sound like you've named your child specifically after that character.

  • If you aren't sure on the name, there's no need to decide yet. DH loved a name for our girl and I wasn't quite sold. We went into the delivery with our son's name and that was it. When I saw our daughter, I knew the name he'd picked was perfect for her and our son's fit him too. I didn't officially say "yes" to her name until 9 hours later when I actually got to hold her (5 weeks early, nicu stay and I had complications).
You have to love your child's name. You'll say it millions of times and you don't want to cringe or regret it every single time.
  • I do love both Spencer and Reid. It's them together and the reference to the show that I'm unsure of.
  • Spencer is a nice name, I'm not sure Reid flows well since they end and start with the R sound. That said, if you really like it, I don't think tons of people will recognize the name (I wouldn't have known where it came from).
  • Currently watching Criminal Minds, haha. If I was in love with the name, I would still use it!

  • I think its a great name and don't know the show.  Most importantly, your kid will live with his name looooooong after that show is over, off the air, and the character is forgotten.  I say, go for it.  Or what about something like Spencer Reasse maybe just as a slight modification...good luck :)
  • Never watched the show, but I like the name. Anything is better with the name Spencer than Pratt!

  • I like the name, but wasn't familiar with the tv show reference. It may get very old for him as he's growing up and everyone mentions Criminal Minds.

  • Lurking from 2nd tri. I thought of the show immediately but it won't always be a relevant pop culture reference.

  • You have to consider whether or not you'll feel stupid in the future, or embarrassed while yelling that name at a playground, or telling your name choice to intimidating people. So I always do the playground test and yell loudly the name of choice. If I still feel good after yelling it very loudly, then I know it's a pretty good name.
