I go to town on strawberries whenever possible--by far my favorite. I'm lucky to live up the street from our weekly farmer's market, though, with organic produce throughout. I also hit up the organic section at the store. I can't wait for spring/summer when they come back in season and taste soooo much better.
Ok, so I talked to my OB last week. He told me to go for deli meat, as long as it's not older than one week. I'd watch out for lettuce right now, as that is where the real listeria problem arises.
I was going to get my hair colored, but my OB told me he wouldn't do that! I was so surprised. If I did, he said to do it after 16 weeks. His point was that if the child ends up with some neuro tic later in life, I'll always be wondering if it was the hair dye.
I had a turkey sub from Charley's this weekend, but they heat the meat up on the grill so I feel like that's probably even better than Subway toasting the subs. Plus, like others have said, I'm probably more likely to get listeria from a bag of lettuce than turkey.
The only strawberries I've had so far are frozen ones in smoothies but maybe when strawberry season comes around I'll try organic (unless the price is ridiculous). I do wash them all before eating, so maybe that helps.
Oops! I hope no one thought I was implying there is something wrong with strawberries--they are so good for you and full of vitamin C! I had just seen a previous poster seem nervous about them being on a list of produce with higher odds of pesticide exposure. I was just mentioning that's why I try to go organic with certain types of produce. It's always important to rinse your produce before eating it, whether it's organic or not. Go after those strawberries, ladies! I know I am.
I've totally been neglecting to take my prenatal vitamin. I take synthroid in the morning and can't take my vitamin with it, so my plan is to take the vitamin before bed, but of course I end up falling asleep without taking it. I need to come up with a better plan.
My OB is OK with deli meats and soft cheeses (provided the cheese is pasteurized). Fish once *maybe* twice a week is also OK (according to him). Caffeine is OK too. He does advise absolutely no alcohol. With my last pregnancy I would have an occassional small glass of wine starting in the middle of second trimester. I think I had maybe 4 small glasses in total. My 11-month old is totally fine and ahead of all of her milestones so far. I don't think I'll have any alcohol with this pregnancy though given how strongly the AAP came out against it recently. The NHS (Britain's healthcare agency) also changed its stance on drinking in pregnancy in the past few months and now says absolutely no alcohol in pregnancy. I have read France is also changing (or maybe already changed?) its guidelines.
That said, I do drink one cappuccino a day. In my last pregnancy, I HATED that people had an opinion on that. I was even scolded by Starbucks' baristas on more than one occasion for ordering something with caffeine in it for myself. I wanted to say, "Are you my OB?? No? Mmmm'kay, then your opinion does not apply. Thanks though."
Ha! You totally should have said that - I would have paid money to see their reaction!
