Trying to Get Pregnant

Metforamin

Hello everyone! I have been TTC for a year and a half with no luck. My OBGYN put me on Metforamin and diagnosed me with PCOS. Just wondering if anyone else was familiar with the drug and if it helped with conception. Thank you!

    QFP.

I am not a doctor, but Metformin is a diabetes drug.  I did find some information regarding its use in treatment for PCOS. https://www.conceiveeasy.com/get-pregnant/metformin-and-conception/  But I can't say this is something with which I have any personal experience.  GL!!!

  • I am a pharmacist and @BusinessWife is correct....METFORMIN is used for diabetes, but can also induce ovulation in women with PCOS.

It has been known to help with PCOS by lowering insulin levels, which is a common problem with both diabetes and PCOS.  You may have shorter cycles with more regular ovulation while on it.  It will make your hormones more balanced.  :)

You might have better luck posting this in the 1st trimester board.  Most people here have never been pregnant.

    Good luck!!
  • I am on metformin for insulin resistance and pcos. I take 500 mg twice a day. I can't handle anymore or I get sick. I haven't been TTC for very long so we will see if it aides in helping me conceive! Good luck! :)
  • I am also on Metformin 1000 mg XR/day for PCOS. I have been on the medication since October. Fortunately I haven't had any bad side effects, but it hasn't really improved my cycle regularity either.

I recently spoke to my RE about increasing my metformin dose, and he suggested adding a supplement called Ovasitol instead. It's an inositol supplement which is supposed to also increase insulin sensitivity. If metformin alone doesn't help after a few months, that may be something worth discussing with your doctor. You should NOT take any supplements before talking to your doctor.

  • I am on Metformin due to PCOS. I do not ovulate at all. Get blood work done. Specifically glucose and insulin levels. Ask for an ultrasound to see if you have cysts.

When I got on it initially, I had nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, loss of sweet tooth, weight loss. I am on 1700 mgs. 2 850 pills twice a day. They are slow release.

    Good luck!
