First cold

DD had a great first week of daycare...but she also developed her first cold. She was stuffy this am so I decided to keep her home with me. Her nose is congested and now she's got a little itty bitty dry cough. No fever. I'm going to call the pediatrician when they open but I'm curious any suggestions. I've used saline for her nose and the bulb syringe and the nose frida which is amazing. I have a cool most humidifier in her bedroom. I've read before that some people have kept LO elevated in the crib and I'm wondering how you're accomplished that. Are you putting something under the mattress? And silly question but with the nose frida do you replace the tiny blue foam piece each and every time you use it? She's still sleeping well and smiling and giggling and eating well but she's super stuffy and snores. So cute but I feel so bad for her. Anyone else get a cold this soon from daycare? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: First cold

  • You can actually wash the little blue sponge in the nose Frida but most of the time my LO'S snot doesn't even reach it so I just leave it. Put a book under the mattress to get the angle they also make wedges you put under sheet on top of mattress but I've heard they roll down it. Lastly when my cousin's LO had her first cold it was so bad the pediatrician told them to put their LO on her stomach to sleep to help with her breathing.

  • My LO has been in day care for two months now and I think has gotten a cold each week. She's also gotten a bad stomach virus and pink eye twice. It's exhausting!
Like you I just treat colds with saline drops and the nose Frida. Like pp, the snot doesn't usually reach the foam so I don't change it very often.

Took my little girl to the doc and she had a cold also. They checked her lungs to make sure it wasn't rsv, as this is going around here. You sound like you're doing everything mentioned to me...minus the nose frida as I am not familiar with that. Pediatrician mentioned propping the legs up on one side of the pack n play. She gave me saline drops for nose. And I was suctioning snot out of her nose but she said to leave it most of the time bc too much of that can cause irritation and make her nose/sinuses sore. Hope your little one gets better soon! Sounds typical of daycare but just keep in mind....these sicknesses will help the immune system long term !
  • Thank you ladies. @hlb8179 omg weekly your LO has been sick? Ugh. I recall someone telling me that their LO got sick often in daycare as is the norm but rarely got sick since. Let's hope that's the case with stronger immune systems as a result!

@angholc10 could it be RSV if she's got a minimal dry cough? Its really more nasal congestion. She doesn't sound congested in her chest from what I can tell. I'm going to call the pediatrician today.
  • I doubt its RSV from the symptoms and baby is still happy :) but better to be safe, as sicknesses in babies can progress rather quickly. Aubree had a little of a cough that sounded "croup-y" to me so that's what made me take her. They can easily listen to LO's lungs and give you a peaceful state of mind :)
  • I gave the pediatrician a call with our first cold just ask them what to look for as a new mom. Another thing you can do is bring her in the bathroom when you run the shower hot so that the steam helps to break up mucus. You could even put her on the floor with some toys when you take a shower. Be careful with the nose Frida. With our first cold it was used too much and my daughter got a bloody nose. Make sure she has a normal amount of wet diapers. Colds suck but they do help the immune system. Prepare for a lot in daycare. And the best of luck !
  • I second the hot shower. It helps with congested nose and cough.
I am dreading the day when I bring my kid to the daycare. They always come back with a cold or a bad behavior :(
  • Exact same situation practically! My son just completed his 2nd week of day care and has a cold. He kept waking himself up last night because he couldn't breathe through his nose. I feel so bad for him. We used the bulb, nose frida, and humidifier. None of those calmed him down so we fed him (rare these days he has a night feeding) and he seemed to be ok. I put him down and he was breathing fine, had been fed, changed, had everything he needed. I had been up with him for 2 hours so I just had to go back to sleep. He squeaked for a while but eventually went to sleep. Tough night! Hoping this cold runs its course soon. I'm really not looking forward to him picking up things from daycare.
  • @duckygirl11 I know it's disappointing but everyone keeps saying how it will help build LO immunity. I've been told kids in daycare get a lot of colds when they're young but then rarely get sick later so let's hope for that! Oh and I did have her in the bathroom while we both showered so the steam seemed to help too. Hope your LO gets better soon!
  • I put a pillow or a good size blanket folded up and place it under the head on his mattress and it works really nicely
  • My LO had back to back colds in December and we used a humidifier, nose frida, placed towels under one end of his mattress to elevate it slightly, and used Vicks baby rub. The Vicks Baby Rub doesn't have menthol in it so it's not as effective as typical Vicks that adults use, but it still seemed to help. It can be used in babies 3 months and older. Unfortunately with colds there's not much else you can do other than to wait it out!
  • My LO got a bad cold her first week of daycare too! She has been stuffy off and on since, but not really sick like she was in the beginning. Hope your LO feels better soon!
  • I did the first time mom thing and brought him to the doc. He had a wet cough that I didn't like. My crazy mom brain was screaming PERTUSSIS!!!! But it was nothing, just a run of the mill cold. I'm glad I brought him in, gave me peace of mind. It's so hard when they're sick!
